The Covenant attacked because the prophets new that humans very existence contradicted their religion.   Its as simple as that.

I think halo wars is further along than we think and even if that isn't true, some info wouldn't hurt.  Its not like some information would be bad.  If bungie themself has played this game, Im sure they have something to show or talk about it.
