    The Survivors

Here it is.  the first chapter of my first fanfic.

Chapter 1:  A nightmare come true

In writing down an account of these events it became clear to me that in order to protect my identity, and the identity of anyone else who witnessed the following events, I have excluded all names of the persons involved, and I substituted place and planet names with fake ones as well.  It seems strange that the events in the following account happened only days ago, I am still shaken up so I apologize in advance if in my nervousness I make recognizable mistakes.  With that being said I shall now begin my account, but where?  Ah yes!

Dust half filled the deserted street.  I could just barely make out the strange figure skulking towards the building I was hiding in.  I looked around for another way of escape.  All the doors had been destroyed when this building had been hit.  Great, I thought, I am trapped in here with that… THING coming this way!  Perhaps it wouldn’t notice me!  Perhaps it would not see my shadow through the window.  I looked out from my hiding spot again to see if the monster had moved on yet, no such luck, he was still there.  I grabbed the only things that stood in between me and it: my MA5B, and a few grenades.  A few hours ago I found them a with ammo clips near a mostly ruined warthog just outside of Feltago, where I li- where I used to live.

The covenant had killed most of the people in the town when they landed.  At the time the town wasn’t sure what to think about the ship that hovered above the nearby forest.  At first we thought that perhaps the UNSC had decided to set up a base here, but 3 days ago that changed when we saw them charging out of the forest that night in the direction to the west of town.  We called for the UNSC to send marines to protect us, and all we could do was wait.  It would take several hours for either group to reach us, because the covenant didn’t immediately see our town, in fact they had passed us right by, but when they did spot our town they decided to use the standard “leave no enemy stronghold intact” strategy, and turned around to attack us.

The marines got here about 20 minutes before the aliens were close enough for their banshees to shoot out our spotlights.  The Marines had everyone get into their pelicans and fly to a safe area.  (Needless to say I didn’t get in, me being what I am:  A very aggressive journalist!  I wanted to see the alien scum up close enough that I could turn this attack into the greatest story of my career, maybe even go on to bigger and better things, and finally get out of this tiny town!  But I had overestimated our fighting elite, and underestimated theirs.  I didn’t know anything about them 3 days ago, but I know better now.

I looked out the window again, the ugly bird-like alien still stood there, but now it had been joined by a much larger, meaner looking (if possible) alien with an evil looking face.  He looked like King Kong come to life.  I thought to myself.  I had heard that they were ugly, but that is awful!  I sat in perfect silence… waiting for the sounds of my death walking closer with each passing second.  Suddenly I heard the roar of a small airship landing near my hiding spot.  I heard explosions and gunfire outside… and strange voices.  What on earth is going on?!? I thought.  Did the UNSC send more marines?  No, that screaming didn’t sound human.  It was as if the aliens had started fighting amongst themselves.  Daring to take another peek, I looked out the window of the half destroyed building one more time.  I tried to see through the smoke that had gathered from the weapon fire, and destroyed vehicles, and straining my eyes a little more I saw the outline of a large figure.  It was looking through the window.  Oh no!  I thought:  It saw me, I am a dead man!  But then the smoke cleared, and what I had thought was an alien coming to kill me, was in fact an immense soldier in strange armor.  Are you all right sir?” He asked.  “Y---ye—yes-ss-s.”  I stammered, “I-I have a broken arm, but nothing more.”  I kept staring at him, bewildered at my strange rescuer.  “Who are you?”  I asked.  “Are you a marine?”  He said nothing, but looked away from me for a moment, and then opened a com channel.  I found a civilian survivor.  He needs medical attention soon.  I never heard the reply, but I could tell he didn’t like it because he punched a hole in the concrete building where I was hiding.  I am taking you to our field hospital.  Come on.”   He put a splint on my left arm, and helped me to my feet.  I looked at him gratefully, but I couldn’t tell what he thought about his new orders:  His head was entirely covered by a helmet of the same color as his armor:  Olive drab.  “How far is your hospital sir?” I asked, looking and feeling very weary from just having to survive the past 3 days.  They had been a nightmare come true.  I thought again about what had happened to me in those 3 days.  I shuddered, remembering the screams of the marines as they were slaughtered by the ruthless alien beings.  They were completely helpless.  The aliens were too strong; they came in wave after never ending monstrous wave.  Like I said before, a nightmare that came true.  A few marines had been able to hold out through the carnage, but they were probably long since dead.  I hadn’t seen anyone besides myself and the aliens when I was scavenging.  I asked the strange soldier again.  “How far is the hospital sir?”  He looked away.

About 2 days marching from here.  We will have to hurry, I don’t want them to find out we are here until it is too late for them to catch us.”  He looked at the gun that I held.  Do you know how to use that thing?  He asked.  I nodded yes.  Good, how well can you shoot?  I looked at him again.  “Well enough to keep myself alive for 3 nightmarish days of alien invasion.”  This made him start for some reason.  You stayed alive for 3 days?  No military training or support?  How?  I think if I could have seen his face it would have been full of astonishment.  Perhaps he didn’t think that it was possible for anyone who wasn’t with the military to survive that long.  But perhaps he had seen enough to have the right to think that.

The next few hours were rather uneventful.  I hoped that they hadn’t paid much attention to the 2 of us as we crept out of the town, but my strange rescuer was not as convinced that they would let us go that easily.  (Little did I know that not too long from then he would be right.)  I looked around the makeshift camp.  He was still standing guard, even though we hadn’t seen any covenant since we left the remnants of Feltago.  We had been lucky enough to sneak past them without being seen, (which I later found out is quite a feat because of their heightened senses.) and got into the woods before they even noticed we were alive.  I know that it seems kind of strange, I know what you are thinking:  Why go into the woods when that is where they came from in the first place?  Well, their ship flew off the day that they attacked us, so they wouldn’t be there anymore right?  I wished.

    Chapter 2:  you can run…

Suddenly a noise came from the other side of the campsite.  A broken twig, rustling underbrush:  was someone (or something?) there?  I didn’t want to find out, but my “friend” went over to investigate.  He paused for a moment then motioned for me to grab “my” gun and be ready to run.  He looked around once more then lowered his gun.  I set mine down as well, trying to settle down on my patch of ground again.  We heard another noise, this time from where he had just been.  All of a sudden a large ape-like creature jumped out of the bushes at my strange rescuer.  “Look out!”  I cried, “Behind you!”  He spun around and fired his weapon at the beast.  It dodged with amazing agility for a creature its size.  I wished that my camera hadn’t gotten broken 2 days before. It would have been amazing to get this on tape.  I scrambled around for my own weapon, but didn’t fire it yet for fear of hitting my companion.  (I was good with it, but not that good.)  The ape creature reached for him, pulling his gun out of his hands.

They wrestled on the ground for a few moments, and then came up, each looking like something out of a horror film.  I looked around for other intruders but fortunately (or perhaps not) I didn’t see any yet.  Perhaps they only sent one?  I thought to myself.  No, he can’t be all they sent.  There will be those little ones here too!  I heard gunfire behind me and looked back at my struggling companion:  He had managed to pick his gun back up and had just pulled the trigger with the gun to its head.  It batted him off of itself almost effortlessly.  Impossible!  I thought.  How could anything (human or not) be shot in the head at point blank and still live?  Then I saw the armor cap that it was wearing.  These things were smarter than I gave them credit for.  I stared at them for another moment before seeing a little one out of the corner of my eye.  I turned and fired ten or so rounds into his unprotected head.  It gave a shriek of pain that died in a sickening gurgle as its head crumpled from the bullets.

I looked around again.  More were bound to be here: they always traveled in packs.  I saw another one hiding in the bushes and repeated my earlier performance against the dead one’s companion.  I was rewarded with a satisfying thud as the body hit the ground.  I looked back at the alien and the strange soldier to see what was happening.  The ape thing lay on the ground: its neck twisted in an unnatural position.  4 more of the little beasts ran out of their cover, but were quickly dealt with, via a few sharp bursts from my friend’s gun.  We both reloaded and picked up what little gear we had with us.  (We had stopped at the local outdoorsman’s store for packs and food before leaving town.)  My rescuer and I started jogging away from our camp; but it was all I could do to stay where I could see him.  He had the stamina and endurance of a thousand men!

We reached the hospital the next day.  Unfortunately this is where things started getting really bad.

    Re: The Survivors

(what project is that?  Oh by the way, so far I only have 2 chapters that are shorter than 1 page in MS word.)

Chapter 3:  Physician, heal thyself…  AND ME TOO!

My spirits were just recovering from the sneak attack on our camp the night before when the hospital came into view.  At first it looked like everything was normal, but then we saw the fire and smoke coming from the main tent.  We ran to it as quickly as we could without attracting attention from the alien guards we barely spotted coming from the rear of the tent.  When we got inside there were bodies everywhere.  Most of them had been savagely torn to pieces, probably by the bird-like creatures we had seen outside.  In a back corner of the tent I saw some portable holding cells with laser bars on them.  I saw that one of them was occupied.

I tapped my friend’s shoulder, motioning to the cell with the person in it. He looked at the man in the cell, and then looked around for something to break the cell with.  He spotted a crowbar in a toolbox sitting on top of a nearby table.  He grabbed it and hit the controls for the laser bars.  They faded, and then disappeared entirely.  I grabbed the man and propped him up against the cell he was just in.  Sir, are you hurt?” My companion said, Can you move?  “I can move, but I have a nasty gash in my side.” He said, motioning to the dark stain on his shirt.  “I can fix it, but I need to get out of this cell first.”  What happened here? The man looked first at me, then the strange soldier.  “We—w—e wer-e attacked…  They came in the night, and killed the guards.  I was the only prisoner that they took.  How did you get here?  We have to leave!”  My companion looked at me, then back at the battered man.  Are you one of the field doctors of this hospital?”  The man nodded.  “I was the head doctor here, are either of you hurt?”  There were footsteps just outside the tent door.  My strange companion motioned for us to be silent.  We waited until the footsteps faded away until we even dared to breathe again.  My companion motioned to me and said “He has a broken arm, can you help him here?  The doctor looked around the trashed hospital tent.  “I might be able to but… we would make too much noise to be unnoticed by the guards outside.”  The soldier looked at the door again.  I can take care of the guards as you help him, but you will need to hurry once they are dead.  Their allies are sure to notice that they haven’t checked in yet.  The doctor nodded again, and the large strange soldier crept to the door.

I asked the doctor how bad my arm was.  “Well,” he replied “you have a large fracture and it will hurt to set it back into place so that it heals properly.  And, it will also hurt tomorrow when your bones start growing back from the regenerative medicine.”  I looked at my poor arm.  “Maybe I shouldn’t have asked.”  He smiled at me in a knowing way.  “Perhaps not,” He said, “perhaps not.”

We heard gunfire right outside the tent.  That was our cue to start the arm fixing.  “Ready?”  He asked.  I nodded in an uneasy way.  “Then I will count to 3 and set the arm straight.  One,” he said.  I closed my eyes, getting ready for the pain.  “Three!”  He shouted and yanked my arm into place.  I screamed in agony, as the searing pain nearly made me black out.  It felt as if it lightning went up and down my arm over and over again.  It was the most painful thing I had ever experienced!  Pain danced up and down my arm again.  It was almost unbearable.

Somewhere close by an alarm went off, and my strange companion came back into the tent.  We need to move, now!  He barked.  We grabbed what medical supplies we could carry, and ran out of the ruined hospital tent at full speed.  Aliens swarmed out of a sleek purple ship that had just landed nearby.

We ran back into the woods about a quarter mile before we finally stopped to take a breath.  I looked at the doctor, and then at the strange soldier.  “Where do we go now?”  I asked him.  “We are sitting ducks here!”  He turned his unseen face from the doc to me.  The only thing that we can do is contact the marine outpost 30 miles to the north.  They might be able to help us.  The doctor and I looked at each other.  “Well,” he said, “if they can help…”  He left it at that.

We started walking north, and stopped only when I and the doc were so tired that we couldn’t take another step.  “Sir,” I called out to the soldier, “we can’t go any farther.  We have gone at least 10 miles since we left the field hospital.”  He looked at us.  Alright, we can stop here.  But I will still stand guard.  He muttered something about babysitting, and stalked over to an old tree stump.  I sat down on the ground and took my pack off.  I took out a book and flipped it to the marked page.  I started reading.  3rd Nephi Chapter 22 verse 17.  I had been stopped their when the sneak attack happened the other night.  Now I could keep going. I read until I got to chapter 26, and was too tired to keep reading.  I put my book back in my pack and I lay down on my thin blanket and tried to get some sleep.  I knew that I would need my strength in the morning.  The doc looked over at me.  “Do you think we will make it out of here alive?”  I was startled by the question.  I never thought about the idea that we might not walk away from this.  “I am sure that we will be fine doc, just fine.”  I turned to look at him on his blanket near the fire.  He smiled at me.  “Thanks.”  He said.  “No problem Doc.”  I rolled back over and closed my eyes and slept.

A sharp pain in my arm woke me up the next morning.  Both of my companions were already awake.  The doc was cooking something on a camp stove.  I looked around for the strange soldier:  He wasn’t anywhere to be seen.  “Where did he go?”  I asked the doc.  “He took his breakfast and said he went to find scout out the path to the marine base.  He said he would be back before too long.”  I scowled; we couldn’t afford to have our only protection be away from us for very long.  A few minutes later he came jogging into view.  I didn’t see any covenant for about 10 miles from here.  I think that we can make it around them if we hurry.  “Ok, let’s get packed up as soon as we eat.  I will get started.”  I grabbed the food that the Doc handed me and ate in silence.  We grabbed our gear and followed the soldier into the woods.  He stopped for a moment and motioned for the Doc to come to him.  Can you shoot?  The Doc nodded, “I hunt at home, so I am not a bad shot.”  Good, here.”  He handed the Doc a gun that I hadn’t seen before out of his sack.  It had a scope on it.  It fires 3 round bursts, so you have to pull the trigger another time to fire it again.  I stared at the powerful looking gun, as did the Doc.  “Thanks!” stammered the Doc.

We moved on.  We crossed streams, rockslides and other natural obstacles.  After about 8 miles we finally came to a large river that only the soldier could cross (because of his armor.).  He carried us both across, and after about 10 minutes we were all across.  We snuck past the covenant patrols we came across, and if we couldn’t the Doc took them down with his scoped gun.  The one time we did have an actual confrontation.  I actually killed two of those strange bird-like ones with the shields!  (Ok, I threw a grenade at them, but that still counts!)  We reached the marine base without much more trouble, only a few patrols of the little ones.  When we did get there the next day they welcomed us in without question when they saw they strange soldier that we were with.  Not that I was surprised, but this man still puzzled me.  Who is this guy?  I thought, he isn’t a marine, but they know who he is and defer to him, confusing.  About half an hour later we were attacked by a massive alien force.
