(FF) The Tide of War Returns

    11th November 2572

    00:45am

    Cairo Station

    Earth

“Sir you won't believe this”, says a ageing marine. The now Admiral of the UNSC Lord Roger Price has taken other the command of earth's defences and all of her colonies, he is a brave, experienced but some what arrogant and aggressive. He stands at 6ft 2 rather broad with shaved hair and a scar on his left cheek proof, of his fighting past with the covenant. He was but 18 when he signed up on 2nd march 2531, he is a veteran of Reach, battle of Earth and of the Ark he fought along side the best of the best of the 105th ODST battalion and the legendary Master chief during the attack of the citadel and ending the war.
He said while walking other to the man, “what is it marine”. “Sir we have a large anomaly approaching one of the drones near Pluto.”

“Bring it on the screen”, “Aye sir”
Lord price looks at the screen trying to figure what could be so large, move so quickly and be undetected until now. A look of horror appears on his face, he bellows “Get all battle stations onto red alert load up the MAC cannons get all available ships to form a defensive perimeter around the orbital stations.
“Sir Ground forces are mobilised, but may I ask what are we preparing for” asks a marine.
“A Covenant invasion” says lord Price, all personnel within the observation deck had horror and fear on there faces, marines started running through hall ways and securing reactor rooms and docking bays.

Mean while ground forces all over Earth where helping in civilian evacuation taking control of the streets, Scorpion tanks, warthogs, ODST and marines crowded the streets ready to take on the Covenant once again.
Lord Price looks towards his 2nd in command. “Get me Commander Rijic ASAP”

Commander Rijic is one of the youngest yet most battle hardened men within the UNSC now that the main forces are filled with glory seeking preschoolers , he stands at 5ft 10 he has a muscular face with stubble rough short black hair, he could give the best ODST a run for his money in hand to hand combat. This has earned him the title of Goliath within the ranks of the military.

“Commander Its great to see you again and trust the years are treating you well”. Said Price with teasing smile, “Better than you it seems” quipped Rijic also with a wide grin.
“So what can I do you for, I have all the soldiers and heavy weaponry in my command mobilised ready to help in anyway they can.” says Rijic with a serious look in his eye.
“Excellent commander” hood replied “I need you to get your best squad and send them to the new ONI building now I can not tell you why as it is top secret but I can assure you they are in no danger with this task”
“Understood” Rijic says with a salute and matches out of Mission centre to the barracks a building the length of a football field made of metal. On his way he stubs his toe on a KS55HB FR Battle Rifle. He picks up the gun and inspects the condition, the weapon had scratches all over, with the one of the sight lenses smashed and bent in a almost U shape.

This angered the commander and stormed into the barracks shouting
“ OK you horrible excuse for men which of you spineless cowards has a weapon missing”
All the marines inside jump from there beds and stand to attention in panic.
The commander walks up the line of soldiers holding the gun in his left hand, looking each marine in the eye, one marine was so petrified he wet himself as the commander stood in front of him,
looking in disgust Rijic told the solider to go and get cleaned up and that he'll deal with him later, the marine wasted no time and ran out of the room.

Meanwhile back in orbit Seraph fighters had been released upon the battle grid, hoping they can board and destroy the MAC stations as they did the last time they fought. As the fighters closed in every Long and shortsword fighter where released in endless waves from the 100+ battle ships orbiting earth to take on the incoming fighters. During this time the Covenant armada stayed beyond the MAC range.

A message appeared on the Cairo Stations main screen as well as every other orbital stations.
The face of a War chieftain clad in platinum armour appeared “ Surrender your worthless planet” Said the ruthless brute. “Surrender now or watch your planet burn I have brought a thousand ships and more you do not stand a chance of victory”
“We will never hand our planet over to the likes of you cheiftan. We will not become your slaves we will die before that happens” Claimed Lord price

“So be It you have no Sangheili scum to protect you now you parasite” growled the brute with anger on his face.
“Let the battle begin my brothers destroy every last human take no prisoners”
The Covenant armada moved closer to engage the UNSC.
“Well everybody get ready” said Price with sorrow in his voice “Where going to War”

I have to be honest; the dialogue is throwing me way off. I'll still attempt to read through it, but it may be a while before I can write a good review.

Yea this is my 1st attempt i had to look at others to get some sort of idea how i go about the dialogue where i should be descriptive and such, its pretty tricky once i get a hang of it the should be some decent stories to come if this takes off.

No, not the description, the layout. One character speaking right after another on the same line, with no distinction who it is or what enhancing emotion is present.

More than that, the tense is very disjointing - it's almost like a precognitive-tense. I could review this piece by piece, but it would take a very long time. I'm glad it's not on paper, I would loose blood by "bleeding*" all over the paper.

*Bleeding over the paper: A term used by some high school students, though it's more prevalent in a college atmosphere. It's a reference to a paper that has been heavily corrected with red ink, giving the image of having been bleed on.

So in future i need to make all the speaking on seprate lines ( i was thinking of doing this but seemed like it would be more of a script.

And take it you meant that you felt that you knew what was going to happen or something along those lines ( i googled precognitive-tense so correct me if im wrong)

I'll do another chapter and see how that goes.

I also forget to mention it took me less than 2 hours with no brain storming before i wrote this story so its no surpirse theres alot of mistakes, i have all weekend for this next one atleast

Re: (FF) The Tide of War Returns

As far as the dialogue goes, here's how I feel it should be written. Others may have oposing opinions, but this is my advice.

    Original:

The Admiral moved urgently to the display. “What is it marine?”

The soldier looked up, a confused and panicked look on his face. “Sir, we have an anomaly approaching one of the drones near Pluto. It has a large signature similar to a Covenant CCS Cruiser.”

This was bad news. The UNSC's Sangheili allies no longer used the Covenant ships, having altered them to fit the alien's society and customs. “Bring it on the screen,” The Admiral ordered.

    “Aye sir”

Admiral Price looks at the screen. Soon the ship was confirmed as a Covenant cruiser, and was on a projected course for Earth. “Alert UNSC outpost 38 on Io, have them prep for incoming Brute forces," Price ordered. "Prepare all available ships to plot a course to Io, and have them give our boys some help."

“Sir," the Marine asked, "Should we prep our home defense as well?

“Not just yet, son,” Lord Price, said, "The Brutes are still too far off for us to greet them yet, but we'll be ready if anything gets past Io."

**It should be noted that Lord Hood (who I assume was the inspiration for Lord Price) was not the "Top #1 Admiral of the UNSC." There were more than one Admirals, just as it is today. His title of Lord is most likely ceremonial, as he was a member of British nobility. It does not mean that he was above other Admirals.

As far as the "precognitive tense" goes, most FF's and stories that I've read are written in either past tense (The Marine fired at the Brute,) Present tense, (the Marine was busy firing at the Brute) or First Person (I fired at the Brute attacking me.) I've never read anything in a "future tense" (The Marine fires at the Brute) unless it was a stage direction in a play.

As far as the Cairo goes, it's very unlikely that it would be operational. The last time we see it, it's near destruction. I severely doubt that it would be up and running as a major hub for UNSC intel.

Ok this is the 2nd half of the story i hope this is better than the last part let me know thanks guys.

    11th November 2572

    02:30am

    Cairo Station

    Earth

“Sir Commander Rijic is establishing contact shall I put him through”asks a marine

“Bring it on the screen” asks Price with worry still on his face and fear in his eye.

“Lord Price I have gathered my best men and are on route to the New ONI Building but may I ask how are things looking up there?”

Lord Price turns to face the screen and tells the commander the brutes are moving into range of the MAC platforms and that they are at war once again only this time without any hope of victory.

The commander suddenly shown a blank look on his face and started to look pale as fear took over.

    “Commander?”
    “Commander?”
    “Commander are you ok?”

Rijic suddenly comes back to reality after Rogers voice came out of the speakers.

    “I'm fine admiral” stutters rijic

“Good now go and prepare for a ground engagement” Barked Price

    “Aye Sir”

These brutes may have more ships and technology but have no brains coming into firing range Price thought now smiling with the sudden good news

As the Brute forces closed in on earth the Super MAC cannons exploded a volley of shots upon the fleet destroying the front line of the assault, and with less than a minute cool down exploded another volley of shots this time with the UNSC Destroyers firing off their now upgraded Super MACS devastating more of the brute forces.

This how ever didn't stop the advancement the brutes where more than happy to sacrifice there troops to win, the shortsword and longsword fighters where being overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of the enemy Seraph fighters. This gave the brutes enough time to board and destroy the MAC stations, Within minutes of boarding Zeus and the Athena exploded leaving nothing but blackened panels of metal hurtling towards earth.
The Brutes seeing their chance to confuse their enemy they deployed a new type of drop-ship called the Djinn, it is much bigger than the old Phantom it can now carry 3 times as many troops and 2 wraith tanks if needed.

The Djinn took cover behind the burning metal falling to earth so they would not be shot down hoping humanity will consider them part of destroyed orbital platforms, and it worked human forces didn't have a clue until brute and grunt forces landed and open fired on anything they saw such as buildings,UNSC forces even wild animals as they fled for safety only to be captured and mauled by the brutes.

Meanwhile at the ONI building the ODST squad had been ordered to go underneath the building to secure the city AI once again to stop it falling into the wrong hands. But what the ODST's where not told was that there where still drones in the sewers as the hives where not destroyed during the 1st war between the covenant and humans.

As the ODST's climbed down into the chamber the loud mouth corporal chirped.

“Why do we have to come down to some smelly sewer while everybody else stays up top killing brutes and grunts its not fair”

“Shut your mouth for all we know this is what those brute bastards are after, and if you wannabe up there to be killed and eaten be my guest” said the Sargent giving the corporal a look that would kill if it was possible.

The Corporals name is Alex he can moan about almost anything if given the chance, he's always had a thirst for a fight, hes around the average 6ft black hair down to his shoulders and not a built as his comrades. He is in charge of explosives and of course on this mission he cant use any.

The Sargent is Brad he is a veteran of war after the war he sought therapy along with other ODST's after seeing planets glassed, families slaughtered and team mates killed right before them had finally sunk in. He was a rookie back then but now is in charge of his own squad, They mean everything to him with his family gone, he just doesn't let on. He is 6ft 2 with broad shoulder and shaven hair, he specializes in hand to hand combat and in zero gravity fighting.

Their teams sniper is Graham the soft man of the team he hates to argue or fight but will do so when pushed or when his comrades needs help. He prefers the sniper rifle because it keeps him out of a fight and can keep a cool head, with this he is a vital asset to the team, it is unknown why he joined the UNSC never mind the ODST's. He is 5ft 7 with auburn hair but to his team-mates he's a red head.

And lastly the teams Scout is Shaun he is quick on his feet and loves to hide to the annoyance of his team when its time to train, he was one of many new recruits that passed with flying colours but with some military experience. During his interview he told officials he took a down marines weapon during the battle of earth, and helped out some marines by sniping from a near by balcony with a battle rifle. This allowed them to escape and he was never seen again until now. He is as you may imagine the only member up for this mission.

As the squad walked down to sector 9 with no problems they suddenly saw the central AI Core.
The squad groaned to each other,
“I thought this was gonna be an easy mission”.

The Sargent chirped in a sarcastic manner “hey Alex looks like you get your fight”

Re: (FF) The Tide of War Returns

Grammar, punctuation, and spelling. These become second nature when you become more experienced, you just need to pay more attention to how you write when you first begin.

However your main problem is detail. At times it seems spontaneous and is given in times of action, when you should be focusing more on the detail of incident rather than the background behind it.

Here you give us some insight to a clever tactic the Brutes use to invade Earth. Instead of describing the situation fully you go from "Hoping humanity will consider them part pf the destroyed orbital platforms" to "and it worked" Not mentioning anything that occured between the Djinn's deceitful tactic to their entry into Earth's atmosphere. You could have done something like this:

The Djinn's ducked behind the falling debris to cover their entry. The UNSC ground forces were clueless as the harmless debris transformed into an invasion force, the Djinns dropped towards Earth's surface unloading their troops and firing on UNSC forces.

A transition such as that would have clarified the confusion the UNSC faced. With all that happens in this part you could have split it into 2 or even 3 parts. You just need to focus a little more on detailing each scenario, give background before hand and then have it happen.
Great idea though, take what I said into consideration.

"Die?"Kurt laughed."Didn't you know?"he told the Elite. "...Spartans never die."

The now Commander in Chief of the UNSC, Lord Roger Price had takenother the command of Earth's defences and all of her colonies, he was a brave, experienced, but some what arrogant and aggressive. He stood at 6' 2", rather broad with shaved hair and a scar on his left cheekproof of his fighting past with the Covenant. He was but 18 when hesigned up on the 2nd of March 2531 joining the Navy SEALS aboard the ship Hit and Run. He was a veteran of the Battle of Earth, the Siege of Madrigal, Sigma Octanus IV and of the Ark. He fought in the air and on the ground with the best ofthe best of the 105th ODST battalion and the legendary Master Chief Petty Officer SPARTAN-117 as a Captain during the Ark and ending the war.
Hesaid while walking over to the Bradley, “What is it, Lieutenant?” “Sir, we have a large anomaly approaching one of the drones nearPluto.” Bradley said from under a red cap at one of the upper balcony stations.

“Bring it on the screen, soldier.” Price grunted. “Aye aye, sir.” Bradley moved his wrinkled hands over the console. He was middle aged, roughly fifty six, and moved faster than most at his age. Price looked at the screen, trying to figure what could be so large, move so quickly and be undetected until now. A look of horror appeared on his face, and he bellowed, “Get all battle stations onto red alert, load up the MAC cannons and get all available ships to form a defensiveperimeter around the orbital stations!"
“Sir, ground forces aremobilized, but may I ask what are we preparing for?” a NAV Officer said curiously.
“An invasion,” said Price .All personnelwithin the observation deck had horror and fear on there faces, marines, SEALS, ODSTs and even–was that a SPARTAN-IV?–started running through hall ways, and securing all doors to the outside and every docking bay.

Mean while, ground forces all over Earthwhere helping in civilian evacuation to underground areas immune to glassing. Taking control of the streets,Scorpion tanks, warthogs, ODST and marines crowded the streets readyto take on the Covenant the Flood, whatever it was once again.
Lord Price looked towards his2nd in command, Commander Archer. “Get me Colonel Rijic and Admiral Anderson ASAP!” Roger, along with his crew, shouted, pressed buttons, sealed doors, grabbed weapons, and overall did the best they could.

Colonel Rijic was one of the youngest yet most battle hardened men within theUNSC now that the main forces were filled with glory seekingpreschoolers, he stood at 5' 10", he had a muscular face withstubble rough short black hair, he could give the best Jiralhanae (Brutes) a run forhis money in hand to hand combat... and he HAD. This had earned him the title of Colonel Goliath within the ranks of the military.

“Colonel! I need you to prepare every one of the ships in your docking station for immediate exfiltration and preparation for combat.” said Price without a smile over the COMM. “Sir, yes sir..." Rijic mocked unenthusiastically from the mobile defense platform The Seven Seas of Rye.
“Alright, what now? I've got everything except supremely damaged ships ready to go.” said Rijic with a serious look in hiseye.
“Excellent, colonel,” Price replied, “I need you to getyour ODSTs and SEALs and send them to the new ONI building in Arabia. Now, I can nottell you why as it is apparently a security risk, but I can assure you they are in nodanger with this task.”
“Understood.” Rijic said with a saluteand marched out of the command deck to the barracks, a structure thelength of a football field long. On his way he stubbed his toeon an MA5K Assault Rifle. Hepicked up the rifle and inspected the condition. The weapon had scratchesall over, with the one of the sight lenses smashed and bent in an almost U shape.

This angered the colonel, who then stormed intothe barracks shouting, “Okay, you horrible excuse for men which ofyou spineless cowards has a weapon missing?”All the marinesinside leapt from their beds and stood to attention.
Thecommander walked up the line of soldiers holding the gun in his lefthand, looking each marine in the eye, one soldier so petrified hewet himself as the commander stood in front of him. “One hundred twenty-three isn't exactly a 'thousand'.” Price mocked the huge chieftain.

The Brute growled in anger, and the Covenant armada moved closerto engage the UNSC.

I noticed i read thought it picked out a few thing you added that did'nt really add, fitted or something i would've really reveal until later chapters.

Now i know your trying to help and trust me i will be taking what you spartan and tmspartan to make this worth reading.

But If i 'was' gonna have spartans in this i would'nt introduce one or atleast hint there is going to be one (if anything i might have my own ideas of sneaking one in XD )

And if a fleet of brutes show up the last thing you would do is take the piss and we all know the UNSC can take on the 100+ ships that you mentioned so i dont feel that would fit to this story either.

But other than that i apprciate your help and will use some of this in my story and keep reading thanks

And if a fleet of brutes show up the last thing you would do is take the piss and we all know the UNSC can take on the 100+ ships that you mentioned so i dont feel that would fit to this story either.

But other than that i apprciate your help and will use some of this in my story and keep reading thanks
I was just saying that it needed a bit more detail. Detail is everything.

“Alright men we need to defend this city at all costs”shouted an ODST leader.

At that moment marines hurried to set up out posts along the boundary's of the city, heavy machine guns where placed in trenches, ODST's took sniping positions on rooftops, and Anti-air Artillery where placed in key locations around the city, Guarded by Gauss turrets and scorpion tanks.

“Hello can anybody hear me?. Is there anyone there?” Came an unknown voice over the radio.

An engineer and telecoms specialist picked up the call, “I read you loud and clear who are you and whats the problem.”
“The covenant there *ksssh*....... Destroying...... ahhhhhh.” the line suddenly went silent.
“Hello? Are you there? Can you read me?” Terry shouted through the radio, with no answer.

“Terry what's going on who was that?” As terry turned around he saw his Sargent standing over him.
The Sargent is called Brian he joined the UNSC in hope to be a great soldier but found his skills within the engineering, even so he was trusted with the standard issue Battle rifle due to his training in the Corps before his transfer.

“Sir.....” Terry paused when a distress signal came onto his screen from a battle squad in North-America. A video then appeared , with a marine on the other end in the background there was a grey haze in the air with soldiers firing a chain gun, then suddenly getting shot in the head by Terry's guess a jackal, no later a scorpion tank rolled across the screen firing Tungsten Armor Piercing Ballistic Capped Rounds form its 105mm cannon Warthogs driving quickly down its side with marines following close behind. An explosion filled the screen with purple smoke and out of nowhere a face appeared on the screen.

“My name is Corporal Joshua Hargreaves can anybody hear me?” he said panicking. We need Reinforcements at coordinates 44°41′43″N, 73°27′30″W, If you can hear me please hurry.”

Brian took a radio “ This is Sargent Brian O'Neil are there any Available Short-sword fighters near coordinates 44°41′43″N, 73°27′30″W”.

A hazy voice came over the radio. “This is the leader of delta blue squadron what can I help you with Sargent?”

“I got a emergency call from that location, it is under heavy covenant assault, are you able to do a bombing run and get reinforcements there safely over” Asked Brian with Terry looking worried by his side.

After a long pause “We just got confirmation we are on route with pelican drop ships and ODST's hot-dropping from Orbit over and out.

“Hargreaves any luck” shouted his team mate.
“No but I sent a message to anybody that coul........” josh stopped when a voice came over the radio.

“This is Delta blue squadron we got your distress call and on route for a bombing run and reinforcements is the area clear over.”
Josh filled with new found joy responded, “Bout time you guys shown up give these covenant bastards hell”.

At that moment all UNSC forces retreated out of bombing range, suddenly Hunters appeared destroying 5 warthogs and wraith plasma ballistic fire arched over the Mgalekgolo and pounded on the armour of the Hefty scorpion, which had fired its cannon in retaliation resulting in a wraith blowing up and taking surrounding brutes and grunts with it.

A thundering noise filled the air marines looked up in the sky to check if there was a storm coming, but instead where treated to the sight of short-swords flying over head with explosions to follow shortly behind.

“We got em your all clear” said the squadron leader over the radio” with cheering marines shouting hugging and high fiving each other with there victory.

This is just a rough draft and will be deleted in time thanks for the help
