Marathon and Halo: kicking a dead horse

So, after reading a necro-ed thread from two years ago, i thought i'd bring this back up again so someone could say, "stupid poopface! this is old news, homes!" well, you can say that, if you'd like. but let's discuss, shall we?

We all know the Marathon Trilogy by Bungie has been referenced A LOT when talking about Halo. while there are very similar character and technology points that could connect, there's also a lot of nomenclature that can be misconstrued.

    1.) The Marathon Symbol
This appears in Halo so much, it's not even funny. It's not funny. period. stop laughing, it really isn't funny at all. like lots, of people think it is, but it's not funny. um.......k? while this is obvious, i feel it's more of an Easter Egg incorporated by the developers for a little nastalgia, but with enough hype, as we are very well versed in, this symbol can become a great huge big topic of discussion.

2.) Master Chief vs. The Cyborg
i have to admit, other than the similarities of them being robotic and the ending of Halo 3 (MC in put back in cryo) with the start of Marathon (a Cyborg wakes up from being frozen for 200 years) there's, well. . . heck that's kinda big! they also have AI's in there heads and stuff, so i just think Bungie likes to recycle their ideas for Protagonists.

3.) "Time is an Ocean, and i was shipwrecked."
<yes, quick ilovebees reference> with the "standard" time between the end of H3 and the start of Marathon being 200 years, it's eerie that the Cyborg is said to have been in deep freeze for 200 years. right? i mean, are you getting goosebumps!?!?? but when the dude wakes up, he doesn't know what's going on, like he doesn't have a memory.

4.) "i still love technology, but not as much as you, you see? always and forever."
the technology difference between the two series is vast and close, at the same time. Space travel, for instance, in Marathon takes years to travel to other systems, while in Halo, slipspace is much faster. but AIs are all around, controlling things and mucking everything up. The ship, Marathon, is a huge hollowed-out planetoid, which, if memory serves me correctly, is a colony vessel.

5.) Cortana and all her friends
AI's have similar roles, as well as intricate parts of the plot for both series. Durandal, an AI in Marathon, is an old English reference to Charlemagne. Cortana is as well, and they're all swords. what? yep, in the old tales of Charlemagne, some swords were forged given the names: Durandana, Cortana, Joyeuse, etc... in fact, a quote from that is this: "My name is Cortana, of the same steel and temper as Joyeuse and Durindana." So, they are the same make? most likely this is just stating the fact that they're all AIs, nothing more.

blah, blah, blah. i know there's more out there, but what are your thoughts? will Bungie remake the Marathon Trilogy? and what of our hero, Master Chief? Will he finally achieve the sucess he craves?!!?

The thought of the Spartan-II's as cyborgs (half man, half machine) is a misconception. The Spartan II's have nothing mechanical about them biologically, they simply receive mechanical augmentation from the MJOLNIR suits. In this respect, Robocop is a better comparison of cyborg-cyborg to the protagonist of Marathon.

ya i dont care what it says in halo 1. even though technically he is, i dont consider MC to be a cyborg in the traditional sense.

Re: Marathon and Halo: kicking a dead horse

okay, guys. i didn't mean to say MC and the Cyborg from Marathon are one in the same or that they're interchangeable. they are not. i meant to say the look similar and look all armored up like a "cyborg" or "mechanical person".

i think one of the most overused misnomers when making this comparison is the exit of H3 and the start of Marathon.
i think Bungie was F-ing with us.
but also, in Halo CE, the first game, the Master Chief emerges from the cryo-pod, awakened when he was needed in times of great distress. In H3, he says the line: "Wake me, when you need me." the hatch closes, and the hero returns back to his state of readiness.
i think this, above all, is what Bungie wanted to say with all that. Cortana wanted some sort of emotional response from John, but instead he remained distant and cold. a necessity for the time.

This could be backed up with the line said by contana

"I am your shield i am your sword" there are tons of links between the 2 games there mainly easter eggs nothing connecting and re-used ideas

The Cyborg was woken up after being frozen for 300 years. And he was put in cryo in 2472, making the connection impossible.

Footbutt just means that bungie uses a lot of the same ideas/concepts in their games.
