    Empire at War Gameplay?

Im a big fan of Lucasart's Star Wars: Empire at War. It offered a new and exciting way to play RTS games. I had often thought of the same game, except Halo in design and looks. I think it would be a great way to play Halo Wars, but this issue arose as I thought about it more.

Space battles. Probably the most significant problem the game would face, as in the Halo books, the UNSC gets ***-slapped every time they fight in space. The question we ask ourselves here is, do we want the game to stay true to the story, or do we just want good action and awesome space battles? This question can also pertain to the entire game, in a way. What do you think? Discuss.

Yeah, I see what you mean. The two sides are just too "unbalenced," I guess you could say, to have EaW type play.

    Re: Empire at War Gameplay?

Galactic Civ dude. It's almost the same. Only differences are, no micromanaged ground battles, and you can go wherever youw ant in space. Otherwise they're almost exactly the same. Except that Galactic Civ has ship customization, a lot more races to choose from, and less emphasis on the skirmishes.

Anyway, the period of time between the colonies and Halo 2 isn't good for an empire building games. That is, colonizing worlds etc. The emphasis is on the battles not the infastructure. Sure an RTS that deviated from the storyline for hte sake of gameplay would be sort of amusing to play, but Bungie is protective, and the style of RTS definitely won't be on such a grand scale. I'm not saying it's isn't possible, I'm saying I think that there's more potential for badassery in skirmishes and small wars, not drawn out conflicts where it's necessary to colonize and control worlds.

Heh.... I was just thinking. You know how UNSC always gets pwned if the Chief isnt there to save them? I know they wouldnt do this, but theres a feeling that every mission will be a retreat or a frenzied attempt to protect a convoy or something.

Naah.. Empire at war had cool space battles, but the ground battles were cluttered and pointless. So i think they should stay away from that path.

    Re: Empire at War Gameplay?

I did enjoy Empire at War a lot, but i don´t want to see the gameplay aspects of Empire at War in Halo Wars. First of all the ground battles in EaW were absolutely terrible. The space battles were cool, but i would like to see a more realistic approach to the space battles. More in the way, that you would control just one or a couple of ships instead of dozens. This would allow for more tactics, and a lot more realism.

The galazy map system is the one thing that i would loke to see in Halo Wars, but galazy map would have to be less linear and more detailed. For example with the Covenant you would have to explore space, and find the human planets from the mist of space. You could also plan more indirect assaults. For example, if with the Covenant you would happen to find out Earths location before the Outer Colonies, you could attack there straight away.

If i would have to mix the perfect combo of games and game aspects, i would make the galazy map to be a bit like the map in the Total War games. I would want the ground battles to be a combination of the small battles of Company of Heroes and the kind of large scale battles in Total War. The space battles should definately be like the ones in Homeworld.

Halo Wars needs to be original.

    Re: Empire at War Gameplay?

MS will choose action over story.  Only a small percent of people from the market who buy Halo actally read the books and get clued up on the history, so it makes sense not to sacrifice playability for history.  I'm hoping for an Empire at War/ BFME experience.

    Re: Empire at War Gameplay?

I would hope to all that is holy and good that this is not like Empire at War... such a broken game, especially the ground combat. Space combat was pretty but it was mostly the same as the ground combat >>

    Re: Empire at War Gameplay?

I would hope not. Empires at War is a broken game, balance wise. Space combat is pretty, but its just the ground combat with a reskin, really.
