this is the deatils of the algorithem used to determine trueskill, it's very complicated so i dont fully understand it but it mainly means (I think) that it matters who you play against, the better the player you face the more truskill and it works on varity so winning sonsitantly means you go up slower but if you throw in a loss every now and then it will go up faster?
...TS sucks
yah, that's too much information for my "out of school for 10 years" brain. i think all that matters is that everyone should know that ts sucks!
Yeah I think that's putting it conservatively, I'm pretty sure you need at least a bachelors in mathematics.
Actually, it doesn't.
TS system is designed to place you at what it thinks is your TRUE skill. So as you play games, based on who you beat and lose to, it adjusts your place. At first it jumps up and down by quite a large margin, but then it slows down to almost a crawl as it pin-points your exact position. It's not a leveling system though. Once it finds your TS spot, you will not move up however many games you play UNLESS you show consistent improvement in your skill.
To show consistent improvement, you need to consistently beat people higher TS than you and not lose to ones lower TS than you. Remember, once it zeroes in on your TS, it doesn't budge by much unless you exert a large force on it. That large force has to be a streak of wins against people with TS HIGHER than yours. Which makes sense... if you can beat people better than you consistently, then you DID get better for real and deserve to go higher.
So ask yourself... do you beat people higher TS than you all the time? If yes, then you should have moved up.
now...the second part of the system that people don't like is getting matched up with people that don't fit their TS. That will become clearer once you understand how the matchmaking works. True Skill is but ONE factor of how it matches you with other people, not the ONLY one. Matchmaking depends on - amongst other things - the following:
- True Skill
- Your Gamertag zone (Recreational, Pro, Underground, etc)
- Your connection speed vs others (to ensure you get the least lag possible)
So... if you are trying to play and you are TS 30 with Gamerzone of Pro and the available pool of players is:
- Player A: TS 20, Zone Pro, Good connection to you
- Player B: TS 45, Zone Underground, Good Connection
- Player C: TS 31, Zone Pro, horrible connection to you
The best player based on TS will be Player C. If you beat him, you'll get a point upwards, it'll probably be a good competitive match. BUT... his connection to you is HORRIBLE. So you'll end up with a very laggy game.
Player B will demolish you and neither of you will have fun.
Player A, while not the optimal choice, is probably the best choice for you. The connection will be good, you're in the same Gamer Zone, etc.
So as you can see, it is trying to give you the best match possible and true skill is but one of the factors. In games like Halo 3 where there are a whole lot more players on than in HW, you get more to choose from and it makes pretty good choices.
