I'm a little suprised this hasn't been discovered yet or posted, but hard counter units don't need to be upgraded in order to kill the other counter. It may not apply to hunters and grizzlies, but think about it. 

Wolverines with no upgrades rape all air units. So unless your looking for a siege weapon of sorts or need to boost their combat efficiency then the upgrades are pointless.

Same with vamps. In fact upgrading them is reletively useless as they already have their stasis attack which is what makes them a great AA.

And cobras too

 

I am not saying that the upgrades are uselss, just pointing out that you don't really need to bother upgrading your cobs if your enemy starts pumping out tanks.

Anyway, yeah, you don't need to upgrade anything really.  But a full pop of wingmen hornets will kill a lot of wolverines.

I agree about the part with Wolverines. But Piercing Shot for Cobras just devastates bases.

One other thing, don't overall attack and defense increase when an upgrade is researched?

For example, volley upgrade not only gives the wolverine the volley attack, it makes the anti-air missiles stronger too. They just don't tell you that.

I agree its better to upgrade them. Thats without a doubt. But I think many people are kind of haters of this game because they feel that unupgraded cobras can't beat canister shell scorps.

Sure wolverines are good against air without their upgrades...but once they got dual launcher, the show is so over for air units that it should never have started.

you've obviously never played a long forge on forge match.  you do need to upgrade cobras.  they're going to throw spartans in the cobras if you wait too long too(which is sort of like needing another 300 dollar upgrade).  You should upgrade your cobras, wolvies not so much, but upgraded cobras eat unupgraded cobras.  and turreted, spartaned cobras eat everything.

While the upgrades for Wolves just helps out, the upgrades for the Vampire are completely necessary to countering air... Who cares if you Stasis them if you can't do damage?

statis does damage. and with upgrades it drains hp to heal your own vampire.

Here is why you should upgrade your Cobras, and Spartans

2-3 shots from a 13 star Cobra will drop a scarab. Cobras are the easiest unit to get 13 stars.

 

I really can't think of a reason you wouldn't upgrade your units, so I'm not sure why you posted this.

Without deflection plating scorpions/grizzlies will wipe out cobras. And hawks easily decimate a small pack of unupgraded wolves - although after volley and especially with dual launchers a group of 5-8 will rip apart any army of air.
