    Cover

I've heard the complaints about Grunts and (to a lesser degree) Marines being to useless. I've seen that they don't last very long. I've noticed most infantry gets mowed down pretty quick. I can't send 1 or 2 Jackals out against a few squads of Marines and expect them to hold there own, let alone win. I think that cover should be implemented. I know the game has it, but it doesn't have nearly enough. If we could garrison behind cliff walls, large stones, piles of sandbags, and even larger units, then the game would be much more interesting. I could hold a coke-point from being captured by enemies just by plopping a few Grunt squads in cover, maybe with a couple Hunters along to make sure they're safe. And then I wouldn't have to keep replacing units every time they fought, because I could expect them to do a good job. It could make for far more strategical battles, with infantry slowly advancing or being pushed back. Most units would be that much more effective then. Anyway, tell me what you think.

    Re: Cover

Nice idea, have you played Gears of war 2? cuz in Gears 2 (havent played 1) you can do that, cept it in 3rd person but anyways if you did it with units (jackals, grunts hunters. marines (ODST's) maybe flamethrowers and ESPECIALLY Spartans or for covie brutes) then it would make it WAAAAY easier.
ODST are like 5 marine squads put together with someone using a rocket.

    Re: Cover

Cover would be nice. It would help against rushes.

    Re: Cover

Yeah, I played both Gears games. I recommend playing the first one. All of the annoying melee units in the second one aren't there, and you'll wonder why you still own the sequel. Anyway, back on topic. I don't really know if it would make it easier (I mean, your units aren't the only ones in cover, after all) but it would give more units a purpose. I mean, how many more mainline infantry would you be using? Albeit, some units wouldn't be as effective in cover as others (flamethrowers would have to be given more hitpoints because so they could survive in the open because of their poor range, and Hunters are just walking cover), but I can't imagine the game-play being changed THAT much other than people are more likely to use infantry and come up with different, map/area-based strategies.

    Re: Cover

I would like to see cover more available in the game too, it would make people create new strategies; there isn't much out there other than warthog rush, hero rush, or turtle it seems like.

This would also make some more urban oriented maps where only infantry could travel through, ie fighting inside buildings going block to block to take a neutral reactor or something.

    Re: Cover

to bad u cant create bunkers like in starcraft then people would think twice about rushing or thinking they could own marines

    Re: Cover

Yeah, urban maps would be cool. And people who rush could get beat back, especially if you, say, garrison troops behind a couple Wraiths and push forward steadily. A hero rush would stand no chance to intelligently garrisoned Jackals and Grunts. What I mainly want to se if FAR more map/area oriented strategies. Universal stratgies are OK, but I want to have my own tactic for a map. That way I could pin the enemy at point A, push them into point B, trick them into an ambush at point D, and finally stage the coup de grace at points F, J, and U.

    Re: Cover

I just thought of something. As the UNSC, when you build a base, you should also have new, sand-bag cover spots open. As the Covenant, you should get some weapon dispenser crate spots. This way, your base can be better fortified by infantry rather than having them just stand around.

    Re: Cover

i would like to see some more battle damage become available as cover.. instead of vehicles dissapearing after blowing up, why not have 1 out of every 10 or so that get destroyed become permanant cover for marines or what not... and have a limit as to how many deployable covers in one game...

    any thoughts on this idea?

    Re: Cover

If there was a place of cover right at the front of your base, it would discourage rushes, and more cover would make it fun, BUT i don't think they should over do it with cover like company of heroes.

Love the even larger units part, would have to be careful to reach a balancing point between too much and too little cover, but I believe a guard tower or something similar would be a good way to stop rushes, seeing as how your infantry is *** near un-killable if you garrison it.

    Re: Cover

You are so right. When there is a level with cover I take it ASAP. There needs to be more in newer maps.

    Re: Cover

I think they should make cover into every vehicle where you can stack marines behind warthogs, tanks and so on which will add 20% deffensive but if vehical moves are blows up then that unit would lose 30 -  50% of its health.  Also when something blows up give 5- 10 secs that can be used for cover if not taken make it dissapear.  once used cover the cover would have its own health bar and depending on vehicale determin how many units and how much damage it can take.

    Re: Cover

I like these suggestions of using downed vehicles as cover. I think if there were to be sandbags/crates in front of the base that you should be able to garrison multiple units behind each piece. Multiple units in cover around your base wouldn't stop a rush, but only 3-4 units might not even slow it.
