    Halo: The Unlatched Casket.

Just when they thought I was dead, another story for you to enjoy!

    Prologue

For centuries, it had felt it. The terrible hunger. Despite it’s best efforts to abate it. The millions it had consumed, the minds it had absorbed, it was never satisfied.

It remembered when it had been great, when it had been feared throughout the galaxy, as it fed of entire planets, absorbing millions of minds and races. But those days had ended, as they had been wiped clean as a race they had fought for centuries activated seven rings, designed to remove life from the galaxy. So many of its comrades had been destroyed. For the survivors, they quickly found out that there was no more food and the hunger was stronger than ever.

In the face of their own extinction, there was only one thing they could do: sleep. So they ignored the agonising pains of the hunger and had gone into a deep slumber. Years past, decades, centuries. Still nothing. The universe was barren, lifeless, and empty. More of them starved as they continued their silent slumber.

    And then…………..food.

The fools had wandered into their midst, ignorant of their presence on the ring of the former enemies. They quickly acted; consuming all they could in a frantic feeding frenzy. They collected their resources, and a leader formed, ready to propel back to their former glory, and to quench their hunger.

Unfortunately, the food quickly dried up and again they were forced into hibernation.

Years past and it began to feel that all hope was lost, that the hunger would finally consume them and the rest of his kind. But, just as things seemed dire, they arrived. The fools in their space ships, two groups fighting one another. So many diverse race, it was a feast.

But, they waited patiently, leading them into a false sense of security, and when the time was right, they struck. They caught them by surprise and quickly gained their strength and took the ships above the ring. They even took a large space borne city, and their numbers swelled, back to the numbers they had in their prime.

Then they made a choice. The Gravemind, their leader wanted to launch a full out attack to stop their enemies activating the rings again. It had grown strong as well, and had started to draw others to it. The Gravemind had much more strength and virtually all of them followed him. It had managed to keep some of its kind to stay, but they were small in number and supplies were limited.

It stayed because it that the assault was too risky and they should conserve their resources, in case the food ran out again.

Not long after Gravemind left, they sensed its death and those who had stayed with It were drawn into chaos. It took all its strength and willpower to keep control. It realised that if they attacked they would be hunted down and destroyed, so they waited. They consumed everything left on the ring and went back into hibernation.

They waited. The hunger grew stronger and stronger, but they remained silent, as It could sense the ships above them, waiting to cleanse them if they acted.

Eventually, the enemy forces lacked and got complacent. They foolishly started to explore the ring, and walked blindly into their lair. They were alone and not in contact with their superiors. They were an easy meal. Once they were consumed, they used their new knowledge and took the ship in orbit. When they had secured the ship they planned their next move.

It saw a good target. A world controlled by the race known as the humans. It was a colony world and had little to no defences. The ship had been there and done some trading. It was a perfect disguise for their attack.

As they activated the ship’s slipspace drive. It waited impatiently for the unsuspecting food that awaited them. It would succeed where the Gravemind had failed, and at last, they may finally quench their insatiable hunger.

    End of Prologue.

Wow. An amazin narrative Vigil. And seeing as I don't have to read three lenghty Fan Fics to get into the story, I think I cabecome a regular reader for you for the first time. YAY! The description was very in depth and left little to the imagination (In a good way) and I'm left wondering why the ship explored the Ring when they must have been aware of the Flood? And are you insinuating that Covenant or some other race had touched down on the ring before the POA arrived?
Please read and comment my novel in the Liberry.

The other three serve as back-story to this one, but you won't need them to really understand what's going on.

This place long after Halo CE. They way I see it, was the Elites put a quarantine over the ring, but as the years went by, and the lack of Flood activity, they eventually stopped their patrols and explored the ring, which was their undoing.

The Humans and Elites must have kept a relationship if they are trading with each other. So, we can count on Sangheili aid? Or at least that's what I think. The spreading of the Flood is not a very good thing. And just how many alien species were living on High Charity at the time of the infection? Because the Flood at their prime contained billions of Forerunners. And, is the whole story being told through a narrative like this?

In the Halo Universe I made in the last three stories they had a good relationship. As this is set long after those events, the bond is still there and has strengthened to the point of mild trading. They might assists, but I think I'm going to aim for a human story.

I might change that part, but the point was it reminded It of the old days when the Flood were all powerful.

I might do it in a similar fashion to your one, but I doubt there will be much on the Flood's perspective. It's going to focus on the Humans.

Okay Vigil, thanks for your answers. And can't wait to see more. And don't make the Flood underpowered like in so many other Fan Fics. They wiped out a whole race of one of the most advanced people the Universe has ever seen. Make them tough and hard to beat back, like they are described in the Forerunner war.

No problem. I'll always answer a fan.   =]

When I came up with the idea, I centred around one premise:

    Make the Flood scary again.

They aren't going to be the weak, one shot kill creatures of Halo 3.

You're going to be running from them.

Holy....! That was good as always.

I actually admire you Vigil. You caused me to like writing and want it to become my occupation.

    Thanks!

In my times, the darkened days,
    Evil invaded the world.
    We farmers,
We workers of the Red Union,
We united and slaughtered them all.
    The brave soul,
    Above the evil,
Planted our inspiration atop their burning cities.
