    Halo Wars announcement concern

    Hello everyone,

I'd like to say first of all that I am as exited as everyone about this trailer, it looked amazing and it had the perticular 'halo feeling' to it. But, the more I think of it, the more I am worried. For me, Halo was Bungie's game, their thing, but how can anyone else make a good Halo game if it is not for Bungie themselves? I know that Ensemble Studios made the Age of Empires RTS, but I never really liked that game soo much, and I'm slightly worried that this Halo spin-off might not be as good as it could be if made by Bungie.

I don't wish to sound like a jerk, especially when we don't know anything about the game, so I'l just say cheers for the great trailer and I hope the project turns out really well. But i'm really curious to hear what other Halo fans think of a Halo game not made by Bungie...

    Re: Halo Wars announcement concern

I do understand your point of view but you need to look at it from a developers perspective. Bungie have done a great job with the Halo FPS games (1 & 2, soon to be 3), but I cannot recall Bungie bieng great successors of the RTS department (I'm not sure if they have EVER made one), whereas, the Age of Empires series was a hit, a big hit all over america and europe. Bungie have obviously decided that the best move was to call in the RTS experts and get them to see hwta they can do. Although Halo is bungie's department, RTS's are the area in which Ensemble Studios excel in, it would only make sense that if anyone would do a good job of the RTS, it would be them.

      I hope this helps :)

Read bungie's update. They have ppl working along side with this project to keep it a true halo game.

I have faith that bungie won't allow them to cut corners or skimp when it comes to the franchise.  I would rest easy.

    Re: Halo Wars announcement concern

If you read the FAQ on the main site it says that it will be set at the time at the first kinda time of the covenant been discovered. This means it will not tamper wwith the existing storyline and that if you notice that there is lots of spartens which means that it will probably be when the spartans were all alive.

secondly, Bungie is working on it as well so then it wont be just ensemble. also the halo franchise is too good for it to go wrong. you need to trust them

    Re: Halo Wars announcement concern

I feel the same way too. Even though i'm excited about Halo Wars, it kinda feels like Bungie sold the Halo title out.

It was always comforting to know that a fairly small developer like Bungie was capable of making an awesome series such as Halo. It helped remind us that it's not how big your company is, it's the quality of your product.

Also, Bungie has always been closely connected to it's fans. KP is a regular in alot of Halo Fan Sites and IRC.Bungie.Org, and Frankie always keeps us updated on happenings in and around the Halo universe.

We don't have that same expertise that we've come to expect from Bungie as far as their input into a Halo game goes.

But I have alot of faith in Bungie. They wouldn't have just handed over licensing to just anybody, so hopefully Ensemble Studios will turn Halo Wars into the great game it was meant to be.

    Re: Halo Wars announcement concern

Well for al people who feel a bit concerned, Bugie hears you and Bungie.net overlord, Anachronos gives us some reassuring news( taken from a forum conversation from bungie.net):

Normally, from an outside position, I'd agree with you. But I know a little bit more about the internal goings on than you, so please consider a different perspective:

But please understand that we are very protective of Halo. While you may think it is being stretched too thin, we turn down way more pitches than we accept. The movie only came about after we were able to strike a deal that gave us the level of quality control we wanted. Admittedly, it could still suck, but now it has a fairly good chance of being a quality film versus the usual "fire and forget" quality of many video game to movie transfers.

The Halo RTS was also something that we were initially resistant to, but when Ensemble came along, well, you know the rest. Remember - we are gamers too, and we're not going to give our blessing to a crappy idea. Of course, that doesn't guarentee success - making a fun game is hard. But Ensemble is good at what they do, and we are actively involved in not only giving them feedback on their game, but also making sure the fiction matches up with what they are doing. We see as a way to tell more of the story than we would otherwise be able to. It is also going to be interesting to see them take it back to where the Halo concept originally started (it was a RTS game first, then changed to a 3rd person shooter, then finally a first person shooter now).

The best part is that you are the ultimate judge - if you don't like the non-core stuff (anything outside the 3 Bungie made games), then don't buy them. The 3 games will stand on their own. But for those that do like RTS games, we have some Halo for them, just like we'll have some Halo for the movie goer, and some Halo for readers in the books, etc.

As for the comments regarding Frankie and Sketch's participation in these forums... well, that is two fold. First, Sketch is always busy managing the details of our PR and marketing - we have to stay on top of that at all times to make sure marketing is how we like it. Otherwise, those guys do their own thing, and if we weren't involved, we can't really have input into what they do. Frankie, furthermore, spends a lot of time working with the story guys, making sure story continuity is preserved and make sure our fiction rocks. One of the reasons KP was hired was to deal with his increased responsibility. I do try to stay involved in the forums, but there is no one who's job it is to do that - we all have our own "real jobs." That being said, maybe we'll eventually be able to hire "a KP" person for Sketch... but those types of people are very hard to find.

Meanwhile, all I can ask is that you trust us to do the right thing. I also trust that you'll tell us if you think something sucks, but I ask that you wait until you experience that thing first. After all, it isn't like Halo 3 is being affected by these external partners. It is part of Sketch's job, after all, to insulate the guys working on the game from this kind of thing.

I don't think we are Microsoft's -blam!-, as you call it. We are part of them, true, but while the realities of doing business sometimes force a hard choice here and there, that would be the case if were still independently owned... and it would like occur far more often than does now (which is rarely). Microsoft grants us a lot of freedom to do what we think is right for Halo, because it makes good business sense to use our expertise. So far, I think the relationship has produced some good results, don't you think?

    Re: Halo Wars announcement concern

The only thing I feel concerned about really is the control system for the xbox 360. Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth 2, in my personal opinion, had a rubbish control system - it was just a straight port from the PC - I suppose because the game is actually being designed for Xbox 360, it could be better. Hopefully...

Yeah thats the one thing I was worried about the control system other than that this is going to be a great game

    Ensemble Studios?

Altough I have heard of the AoE games I never actually played one so i cant really talk from experience, but in my opinion Westwood Studios (the Command and Conquer series) would probably make a great Halo RTS... they have many many titles and they hit the nail right on the head with red Alert 2 and yuri's revenge... I was obsessed with that game for a loooong time... maybe I think that because I started playing RTS games with Westwood Studios' game Red Alert (the first). Thats just what I think...

Ensenble Studios has won many awards for their AOE series, you should go pick one up.

    Re: Ensemble Studios?

Westwood *might* have been a good choice, before EA stripped every last vestige of it away, but I trust Ensemble Studios with this game more than I would trust Westwood.  Ensemble Studios are a close partner of Microsoft Game Studios, and I think that close relationship is important.  Ensemble Studios have to work closely with Bungie's creative team to make sure everything is to spec and doesn't contravene Halo canon.  I think an existing relationship is much better than forging a new one.
