but i think there are 7 left. (there is another 7 in the Halo verse)  

Fred, Linda, Kelly(with the doctor) the three that were out in some fare out galaxy to far to be called back in and John (The MC)

So why don't we ever see Fred or Linda in halo 2.

If you read Ghosts of Onyx, there is seven, Fred, Linda, Kelly and the other 3, Will is killed off in the novel and Kurt (if you read the novel) is another SPARTAN-II but is also killed too.

no dude fred was on Reach's surface with Red Team (or blue I i cant remember the color) and Linda did almost get killed but if you read First Strike it says how Linda survived in a cryotube and how MC, Sergeant Johnson, Cpl. Locklear (kick---), and WO Palowski went to Reach's surface and rescued Fred and the survivng Spartans
