    Brute force over strategy?

From all the videos i've seen, brute force is definitely used over flanks\strategies, etc. In fact, I don't think flanking would help in the scenarios given...

I seriously hope this game isn't being dumbed down to a game of big explosions targeted to your average Halo fan... Explosions keep idiots around for only so long and by dumbing the game down, the real target of this RTS is pretty much no one.

I don't think I can name a flank in the game thats useful except maybe a sniper flank, but infantry units are to slow for a successful flank.

Their isn't a rock\paper\scissors aspect either... Tank beats lighter vehicles, vehicles beat infantry, infantry beat weaker infantry..

     Someone convince me otherwise...

we haven't seen what really is in halo wars. only demos which are goofed

You also have to remember that flanking and strategic movements aren't the only strategies you can employ. While it still may be just 'Brute strength' tactical unit combos (Scorpion + Wolverine) can be just as important as how you move your soldiers.

The point of demos are to show what gameplay is like, what the GAME is like.

If the videos aren't doing that, then something is seriously wrong.

    Lethe:

Then you should be pretty happy with the game; it's a lot of fun.
Even if a squad of marines out of dozens of units on a battle field has shoulder pads .25" too thick for a fanboy's tastes :)

    Inspires confidence, no?

    Re: Brute force over strategy?

Rasq summed that up pretty good.

Halo Wars has dodged gameplay amonth other things for simplicity. Sure a 3 year old will be able to play your game but thats about it. What else does halo wars really have going for it? Graphics......not really, Gameplay is pretty much a C&C halo mod, and of course the 3 year old usable controll scheme (which is a good thing). But their controls wont make a game good.

Back to the topic at hand. From what we've seen halo wars gameplay is all about who has the better units and how many of them you have. Thats not strategy, So until halo wars gameplay switches from Riot Group vs Riot Group the only thing i have to look forward to is the cinematics

    Re: Brute force over strategy?

    Flanking isn't everything.

Ambushes. That is one of the things you can set up.

Artillery strikes/Air strikes. You have artillery and air units. Use them.

Vehicle flanking. Incoming heavy infantry/specialized infantry. Send in a few ghosts/warthogs to soften them up.

    Fortifications; Mines. Turrets. Patrols.

If you have to use rock paper sicissors based stratgy, why buy an rts? I like complex strategems, not just send in the unit that counters the enemy unit. Use combinations of units or set up traps. I'm not saying ES will use either though, I just don't know.

    Re: Brute force over strategy?

This game is supposed to be fast-paced. Aka mindless rushing.

I wouldn't be surprised if the kid who says "oooh pretty colors" beats the "armchair general" with ease in this game.

    Re: Brute force over strategy?

Brute force is for those who like big and cool units.... right down to it just give me a squad or two of units maybe one tank and I can hold off half an army long enough for the rest of my troops to arive. I think they will try to keep a balance of cool looking units and stratagy... only reason I play rts games is to improve apon my tactics.

Explosions are fun but they just dont cut it in an rts.

    Heratics get shot,
    war heros are celabrated,
BUT what if both sides hate you?

In all the wars we have faced the death toll total has been millions, so whats wrong with a few more?

And when your reinforcements arrive you'll use brute force, so much for being different. Besides, strategy games are about strategy, not tactics. If you wanna learn tactics, pick a few Clancy games, and read some tactical journals.

This is a new kind of war, I'm not sure I fit in anymore.

    Re: Brute force over strategy?

Guys, don't jump the gun. It's still almost half a year before the game's ready to ship. Also, give Ensemble Studios a break, they're packing up and moving out which will affect the game. It's probably a scheme were Microsoft ends up with more money off Halo Wars. Be patient, the game will at the very least be decent. Calm down.

    Re: Brute force over strategy?

I'll agree there hasnt really been alot of strategy in the vids we've seen. But these are the same people that brought you AOE i seriously think they wouldnt just make it like mobs of untis against each other.

And the only people weve seen and heard play it are people not from ensemle who havent played it before. Look at the 12 minute video the guy is getting owned at the end.
