    hd dvds

do you think the 360 will ever use hd dvds for their game? they would be able to make much larger games with just one disc much easier. the only problem i see is that the hd dvd player costs an extra 200 bucks. i wish they could have included in the system instead of waiting until sony announced that the ps3 would do blu-ray

    Re: hd dvds

Well, that depends on many things.

    1. People first have to be willing to spend that much money on HD DVD for their system
    2. Why would you make a game only for HD DVD? That would just be stupid
    3. It might be standard in the next-gen system for Microsoft if HD DVD wins the market over blue-ray

    Re: hd dvds

Well, you could go on and on debating about wether blue-ray or HD DVD disks are better, but I think that Blue-Ray are able to hold more. What would be cool is if they just combined them. Have two layers of info (HD DVD) that is read by a blue laser (blue-ray). This would create huge amounts of storage.

    Re: hd dvds

um maybe they didn't build it straight in, so that it wouldn't cost ur left nut to buy it in the first place, and it demonstrates the 360's ability to adapt to new requirments, instead of needing to fork out 500+ for a new console every other year, u jsut pay for the add-ons that you WANT, not waht the company thinks u NEED

plus there are betterly priced hd-dvd drives, jsut buy one and intall it on ur 360 yourself, the great thing about xbox is that its easily modded, hard and soft

and blu-ray still won't save the ps3, its already dead to a lot of consumers

    Re: hd dvds

u dont need an hd dvd to read two layers that disc is a dual layer dvd disc. the hd dvd is the blu ray. it uses the blue violet laser also. an hd dvd can hold 30 gb. so it is well worth it

    Re: hd dvds

OK, so mabye I'm a little mixed up, but I know that HD DVD doesn't use a blue laser. Only blue-ray does. That's why it's called, "blue" ray.

    Re: hd dvds

hd dvd uses a blue violet laser which is pretty much the same except it holds 15 gig per layer compared to blu rays 25 per layer. which for a dual layer disc a hd dvd holds 30 gig and blu ray holds 50 gig. so they r close. the difference is the disc. a blu ray is 405 nm, wavelength, the laser in hd dvd is the same so it is the disc. bd cost more though so it is more beneficial to use hd dvd.

    Re: hd dvds

    it's spelled blu-ray skita.

back on track, i don't think consumers are ready for blu-ray. i just don't think the time is right. dvds made it into the market because they are so convinient compared to the OBSELITE vhs. but the dvd isn't obselite, it's doing just fine. i like the idea of the hd dvd, it's just a dual layered dvd. but why blu-ray? why a whole new format? anyways, i hope they lower the price tag on the hd dvd player.just think of how big games could be. also, i believe that a single layered dvd is 6 gigs. not 15. thankyou.

    Re: hd dvds

Yes HD-DVD also uses a blue laser. They just don't put "blue" (or rather "blu") in their name to advertise it that way.

Also, if the Xbox360 would have included a HD-DVD as default, it also would have cost $600 and be coming out right about now... The specs were not final when Xbox360 hardware was locked down (back in around 2003 or 2004) and so they would have had to wait.

I think they made the right choice, even thought it does sacrifice the ability to hold more data. Everyone forgets that compression technology also improves as we move forward in time...

    Re: hd dvds

Now that HD-DVD's can go to 1080p there is no reason for us to consider Blue-Ray better. Also HD-DVD's also use a better compression technology then Blue- Rays

    Re: hd dvds

Another thing you guys forget is that a lot of people don't even have an HDTV. I know I don't and I probably won't for another 5 or 10 years. Being crystal clear isn't worth the price for a good number of people and I'm one of them.

Plus, besides the tv, adding on now would cost a lot. I think perhaps in the next generation if HDTV's are more widely spread.

    Re: hd dvds

what you have to consider for both formats is that they are both expensive yes blu ray is more expensive but that i sbecause it has the performance advantage over hd dvd,  hd dvd is able to pack 15gb onto each layer and can have a maximum of 3 layers for 45 gb of data, while this is still a lot of informationyou still have to look at market sense, if you can pack more on one disk then why not do it. Blu-Ray is able to pack 25gb on one layer 10 more then hd dvd and put 2 layers on a disk, as of currently, for a total capacity of 50 gb now that might not seem like a lot be 5 gb more is a lot of information thats more then one dvd now-a-days. you should also remember that when dvd first released it was very expensive too and it had players running in the thousand and up range. Both offer exceptional quality picture at 1080p resolution which is a display of 1920 x 1080 which is a great pixel count and will give you great image clarity buy when your talking about a resoultion that high the new generation games are going to have to hold a lot of information on them so these next gen formats are going to have to be  a must. What i think that microsoft is going to do is within the nest to year announce that they are going to produce a new xbox with support for new format, by that time the format war will be over and one of them (either hd-dvd or blu-ray, but i think it will be blu ray) will have one. and include a new graphics/ physics/ cpu core. for thier next consol they will have to have a least two of possibly even four gpus onboard and some crazy watercooling solution. to be competitive with not olny sony and nintendo but also with computers, now that consols are finally offering the smae resoultions that pcs have offered for years. oh and for those of you that dont have high def tv's, start saving your money thanks to president george bush and congress they passed a law that states by the feb 17th 2009 all comercial cable amd satelite compaines will stop broadcasting annalog signals which means that if you dont have a digital of high def tv you tv will no longer work. so start saving your pennies

    Re: hd dvds

problem with tis hd dvd and blue ray is the same with when people converted from vhs to dvd no one wanted to spend money on somthing that is new and the people who could afford it when it as new were the elderly who couldnt figure out how to send a damn e-mail
i recently got my grandparents to get a dvd player because well it takes a long time to convince stuborn old people to get somthing new when they figure if the old works why get new and it is kinda reasonable
