This is a prediction for Halo 3.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but Gravemind was on one of the ships heading for Earth at the end of Halo 2, right.  So my idea is that the Forerunners built the Ark to protect the humans (and/or the Covenant, possibly both) from the flood.  The Ark can also be a place to activate the halo rings, destroying all life in the universe.  Maybe the Ark is made to protect the whole planet of Earth, while the Halos destroy the Flood.  It makes sense that the "Ark" protects against the "Flood".  So Gravemind is heading to Earth to stop this possibility, by reaching Earth he will spread the Flood, which is why I think the Flood are definitely going to be in Halo 3.  There is a possibility that The Arbiter and M.C. and the rest of the UNSC, grunts, and hunters team up, wipe out the brutes and prophets, and then destroy the flood.  That would be a good way for the war to end, as well as the Halo series, as an alliance.

The problem with the Ark protecting the whole Earth is that if the Flood got to Earth, they would not be stopped by the Halos firing, so it would mean that everyone would die anyway. If the Ark is a fortress of some kind that protects those inside, I think that it would lock automatically (in case of traitors) and let no one out once the rings had been activated for so many years, waiting for the Flood to starve out, kinda like the timed nuke shelters had time locks to wait out radiation (some funny movies came from these).

as said before, a theory is a theory. there is no evidence to support the ark (if that is it) being a fortress that protects the being inside. the only evidence we know of the ark is that its used to remotely activate all the halos at once. i think that its used to fire the halos and thats it. as i said in another post, the halos were built to kill all sentient life capable of sustaining the flood, the other non sentient life could have developed in the THOUSANDS of years  between the acitvation of the halos and the events of halo:CE.

As stated by another member, the Gravemind is not headed for Earth. He is currently stranded on High Charity. Unless he can get his hands on a working Covenent cruiser he isn't going anywhere for a while. That ship that everyone thought was the Ark at the end of Halo 2 was High Charity's power source.

But if all of earth is the Ark it would explain how the flood are still alive and how the forerunners are all dead!

think about it the flood get to earth the forerunners hide in some dome that we think is the Ark (and so did the forerunners) and they come out thinkin it is safe after the ring is used and the flood are still there on the serface waitin.  The flood finish what is left of the forerunners. But thats just what i think, so dont go bein dicks and sayin it's bullshit!!

  Ark = Noahs ark aka a ship that uses the forerunner crystals.  The forerunner crystals were scattered threwout the galaxy (one was found on reach another coral). They have many abilities. Such as space time manipulation. Which let master chief leave for earth 5 days before he left halo when if we look at the time line in a standard fashion we would understand he left for earth 3 days after he left halo. So it let master chief leave 8 days earlier then previously thought possible.

 

It also let truth get to earth right after regret left so he would have time to get to the ark and perhaps find a crystal before tarturus in his orginal timeline activates halo killing all life(or so he thought would occur.)\

 

It's funny because every one who claims earth is the ark is always ignorant about halo.

 

1) The flood survived because according to guilty spark in h1 the forerunners made the desision to keep them alive for study.

2) Halo kills all life in the galaxy. According to joe staten the forerunners survived but there "no longer in our galaxy". So they left the galaxy to survive quite simple really.

Perhaps the FS is the ark or perhaps a ship found on earth is the ark either way a planet cannot evade radiation that exterminates all life with certain biomass's.

A nice theory Ghost, I have been thinking on it a bit. I also put together than the Covenant is the one-world religion that carries out the beast's deeds. However, there are too main problems with the theory. One: The flood of Noah and the Revelation period are on opposite sides of time. And two: If the Halos are indeed divine judgement, why would the False Prophet be trying to fire them? Wouldn't this actually be bad for Gravemind?

And Overlord, I was more refuting another theory with a widely accepted truth, though not confirmed. He was saying that he thought that if the Ark protects, it protects the whole Earth and I was saying if the Ark protects, it can't protect the whole Earth because then the Flood would just land on Earth and kill everyone, meaning that there would be no point in the Ark protecting at all, since being zapped is much quicker a death than being possessed by a Flood (as you can tell from Jenkin's thoughts in The Flood)
