    Tactical Battles

Yes, I know that there have been at least 5 different threads about this. However, none of those threads have stayed alive. I plan to change that.

You can chose the weapons for your army (be realistic or it will not be considered. For instance, don't give all your guys Snipers.)

In this mission, you have a squad of Spartan 3s (5), 4 Scorpions, 10 LAAG Warthogs, 5 Gauss Warthogs, 2 Wolverines, 2 Cougars, 1 Pelican, 5 Sparrowhawks, 6 Marines, 2 ODST squads, and 2 Sniper squads. Your mission is to defend a base. You can provide the specs for the entrance to the base, and the base itself. The attacking force is 2,000 Grunts, 800 Elites, 100 Ghosts, 50 Wraiths, 10 Phantoms, and 5 Seraphs. You may chose to fight as either the Covenant or the Humans.

    Re: Tactical Battles

    im playing as the humans

and im assuming that by 6 marines... you actually mean 6 squads of marines.... and im assuming that there are also 50 banshees attacking

my base is sutuated ontop of a hill at the end of a long canyon... it is layed out very similar to that of the base in highground... only larger... and has no missile turret....

the scorpions are however not in the base... they are in camoflauged tank pits hidden in the woods giving them arial cover from seraphs and banshees...

ODST's defend the tanks from infantry rushes with 2 squads of marines

2 squads of marines stay back at the base along with 3 gauss warthogs and 4 LAAG warthogs... the warthogs are parked and set up in defencive positions overlooking the battlefeilds where they can rain fire from a better angle onto the battlefeild... the sideseats and drivers dismount and form two 7 man squads of marines for additional base defence.... 2 of the 4 LAAG hogs are taken apart and the guns used as anti air guns.

the remaining warthogs form up into two gunning groups along with the two cougers.. each of which is carring a squad of marines... these are hit and run groups... as well as point defence hitters....

the sparrowhawks job is to take out the phantoms at all costs... and once the phantoms are destroyed... bomb the wraiths

the sniper teams both take up covered positions up in the hills... and are ordered to fall back to the base if they are discovered... but they most likely will not be... due to the heavy foilage

the wolverines are used to defend the base and tanks from arial attack... but are to stay back from the main covenant attack

the spartans are armed with heavy weaponry and sent to hit the wraith column from behind... and keep running hit and run attacks on other key parts of the covenant attack.... they are expendable

    Re: Tactical Battles

I would just like to begin by saying that anything less than a battalion of spartans and every weapon that the UNSC can provide them probably couldnt win this.

    I am the UNSC

The reason for the attack from the covenant instead of simply glassing the entire area is that they need the hill that my troops are placed on as a position for a Anti-Ship gun protecting the forerunner dreadnought ship while they excavate the planet. There are no other positions for about 200 kilometers that is wide and tall enough for a gun. Therefore the hill cannot be damaged by ship fire.

The hill has no wall defences of any kind but earthwork trenches put in place by the marines. My line first line of defence will be in a shallow trench holding a force parallel to the covenant attack force. This force will consist of 4 marine squads, 1 ODST squad, and a sniper squad. This line has barbed wire in the front and Lotus Anti-Tank mines in front placed by the Spartans. To the rear of the land will be many caves dug into this thick hill that will hold 3 scorpions and a LAAG. The Spartans are hidden in the caves to assist any marine squad who is outnumbered or outgunned, they are armed with BR55's, MA5B, M41 SSR MAV/AW rocket launchers, and SRS 99D AM sniper rifles

Behind these caves is a depression giving cover to any direct fire and from the seraphs. This is where the landing pads are for my Pelicans and Sparrowhawks. The Sparrowhawks will proved infantry and light vehicle cover (Ghosts, Specters) while the Pelicans will take care of all Heavy land vehicles and Light dropships. Behind this is the final line which holds the reserve forces placed to skirmish with any covenant forces and plainly just harass the covenant and every conceivable opportunity. This force consists of  8 LAAG's, 1 Marine squad, 1 ODST squad, 1 Sniper squad, 2 Cougars, and 3 Guass Warthogs.

There are also many small positions that are hidden from sight and air attack, that have 2 Wolverines and 2 Gauss Warthogs, these are anti-air positions and are well behind all of the defences of the hill.

    Re: Tactical Battles

Not enough information to create a truly impressive tactical plan.

But ill give it a try

Tactical map, with general Information (its quite shitty =D)

Since terrain is not specified, we'll go with moderately brushy plains and rolling hills. There are 5 Hills positioned in a rougly circular shape, and jagged mountains rise up behind them.

The fort is a Standard UNSC Construct, A 3 Walled concentric ring of bunkers and battlements.

On the outer layer, at the bottom of the first hill, is Standard UNSC bunker, On the second hill, another bunker and Firing pit provide a Crossfire.

On the upper Hills are Small UNSC outposts, and a long trench with Tank traps+Barbed wire ont he long slope infront of it.

     Part 1: UNSC Force organization.

The unsc force is organized into 5 Companys.

The spartan 3's are on the leftmost flank, and are designated as a small lightblue dot on the drawing. There goal is to take out the Grunt manned positions.

The 4 scorpions and snipers are the Navy blue Strip in the rear, There job is covering fire support.

The Main bulk of the UNSC forces is the Mobile assault force, and the Marine Strike force.

The Marine Strike force is marked as an Teal rectangle on the tac map. It consists of 4 LAAG Warthogs, and 3 Guass. It also has the Cougars and Wolverines. It's Infantry detachment is 4 Marine Squads, and 1 ODST.

The Armored strikeforce is Consisted of 5 Sparrowhawks and the pelicans. The marines are mounted in the Pelican, and the ODST's are strapped onto Mobile drop pads mounted on a attachement on the sparrowhawk's sides.

The last force is the Fast reaction Exploitation force, The reserves. It consists of all remaining Vehicle's. Its job is to exploit any breakthrough made by the attacking forces. Purple Tac map Square marker

ODST's are armed with Battle Rifles and SMG'S, + 1 shotgun/Rocket launcher per squad

Marines are armed with MA5B's, Pistols, And 1 Rocket launcher per squad.

    Part 2: Covenant Force Organization.

The covenant legion is divided into 4 Class units. Note that i have chosen to Embed hunters, as they are usually a few pairs mixied in with Elite groups.

The Elites are Dark gray, The grunts gray, Hunters are marked black, and the Jackals are forest green.

The covenant force deployment is pretty much as expected. Hunters and elites form the core of the defenses, with Unnogy Legions manning the trenches. A medium sized detachment of jackals are positioned in the highest trenchlines to give sniper support. And as a note, for every Unoggy Troop (100 warriors) There is an elite command team, 1 Red Elite, 3 Blue Lieutnenat elites.

    Part 3: The attack

The UNSC forces approach during cover of night, Scorpions and louder vehicles are held in reserve, till the fight begins, to maintain Surprise. The Covenant forces have mounted Stationary shades all over the bunker complex, and are currently on Low response mode. The Spartan 3 team infiltrates the rear, and starts to take out Jackal snipers, and eliminate Grunt Forces. 2 Spartans are lost, but most of the Rear guard is ripped apart in about 30 minutes of silent fightings. Covenant positions jack up to level 3 Alert (Level 5 Is max), and moniter the area around the base. Hunters and Elite kill teams are sent to expunge the spartans, but they have already pulled back. The Elite commander sends out a strike force of 20 Wraiths and About 50 Ghosts + The remains of the grunt force positioned up top, Total you have a armored expedition with about 150 grunts, and several elite teams, and 1 Hunter group venturing out in relatively armored safety. The Sparrowhawks pounce, and take out most of the ghosts, and all of the heafty wraiths. Covenant casulties are high, and the commander orders a Seraph Air to Air strike agianst the sparrowhawks. 1 Sparrowhawk is lost.

While all this is happening, the Marine strike force, and the armored strikeforce are advancing up the path taken by the spartans. The Fortificaitons are hit heavily while Covenant forces are forced to retreat into a defensive ring. They abandon the top hill, thus losing most of the elevation advantage. I decide to move my fast reaction force to take out elites and hunteres along the Covenant Hills, and i order artillery to start barraging the Grunt positions.

Few casulties are inflicted, but the grunts are very demoralized. Under the cover of the arty's noise, the Armored strikeforce and Marine Strikeforce hit the Circle from the top hill, and from the lowest hill. Human casulties are relatively high, but the covenant forces are broken. At this moment, the spartan 3's are sent to take out the hunters. Using rockets and sniper/artillery support, they elimante the hunters. At this time, the sniper's change into standard marines, and mount the scorpions. The attack devestates frontal Grunt positions, and the base is taken.

Teams of Marines clear the bunkers, and Human emplacements are installed. The Elite commander in space decides to send his Phantoms with a load of about 200 elites remaining, to strike into the UNSC's Defenses whiel there weak. Heavy Seraph strafing runs take out 2 of the tanks, and LAAG warthogs take 2 Seraphs down, The other seraphs are withdrawn from the line due to field damage. The Phaton strikeforce hits, and guns down 2 Squads of marines, the remaining troops return fire, and gun down the phantoms with light casulties. But they managed to drop their force, and the Elites begin a deadly Urban Combat. By the time its over, I have only 1 ODST squad, 2 Marine fireteams, and 4 warthogs of LAAG type only. No tanks or any of the other armored vehicles survive. The Pelican and Sparrowhawk make medical runs, and the Base is finally secured.

That's how i would picture that battle.

Note: My judging system is based upon Murphy's Law, and my own devious system. (If your wondering, Murphy's Law is also known as 'what can go wrong, will go wrong')

The Banshees come in on an attack run, and draw fire from the Wolverines and the Anti-Air LAAGs. 7 are destroyed, and the Sparrowhawks are scrambled to take the rest out. The Sparrowhawks are killed, but bring the Banshees down to a nuber of 30. The Banshees fall back, and regroup with the Seraphs.

The Phantom swings in with the 5 Seraphs, and is shot down by the Tanks. The Seraphs are attacked by the Wolverines, and 2 are destroyed. The rest continue towards the base, and destroy one LAAG and half of a 7-man squad. All of them are destroyed. The Grunts advance, and behind them are the Wraiths.

Your Snipers begin firing, and kill 7 Gunners, and one Driver when he popped out to see what was happening. The Banshees begin a sweep pattern, and begin randomly firing their Fuel Rod Cannons and Plasma Cannons into the forest. The Snipers fall back to the Tanks.

The Grunts continue onward, and take fire from the fast-reaction force. The Wraiths begin firing, and one of the 2 Warthogs is destroyed. The rest move around in a flanking move, trying to get behind them. They destroy 11 Wraiths, before they can turn around, and 5 more even after. They begin evasive maneuvers, but the remaining Warthogs is killed. The Cougars return to base.

At base, the Cougars unload their troops and stay behind the gate.

The Spartans lost track of the Wraith column, and re-targeted the Ghosts. As they start following the Wraiths from a distance with the Elites, they run into a mine field of Lotus Anti-Tank Mines. Half of the Ghosts are killed, and only 10 Elites survive. 3 Spartans target the Ghosts with Lasers and Jackhammer Rockets. The other 2 take down the Elites with Sniper fire. They begin running back towards the base and hit the Wraiths from behind. The remaining Wraiths are destroyed, but the Spartans are out of missiles and charges on the lasers. They charge into the Grunts, killing half of them, and 3 make it back to base. One is captured, and the other is dead.

The Grunts are attacked by all remaining UNSC forces, but the Banshees take out 3 of the Tanks with the Fuel Rod Cannons before dying, and the Grunts fire enough Plasma to melt the surface of the wall. All of the Remaining LAAGs are destroyed, and 2 Gauss Warthogs are destroyed. The 7-man squad is killed, and the Snipers are killed as well. 1 of the ODST squads are killed.

    Your loses= 1 Spartan 3, 12 Warthogs, 3 Tanks, all Sparrowhawks, 2 7-man Marine squads, 1 ODST squad, 1 Sniper squad.

    Enemy loses= Total force.

Report back to base to make your combat report immediately! Mission accomplished.

Sorry! You Failed! The mission was to protect the base. However, I like it :)

*edit I'll answer the rest later. It took me half an hour to come up with KrAzY's.

    Re: Tactical Battles

For all of you that won (KrAzY so far), here is another one.

You have 6 squads of ODSTs, 4 Tanks, 2 Gauss Warthogs, 2 Pelicans (each with 1 squad of ODSTs in HEVs, not counting the ones on the ground.) 2 'Hawks, and 4 Shortswords. Your mission is to take over the Covenant base at the end of a valley, over a Forerunner ship that the enemy is trying to dig up. You can only be the UNSC for this one. The enemy strength is: 4 AA batteries, 10,000 Grunts, 50 Elites, 500 Engineers, 20 Ghosts, and 5 Wraiths. Have fun, and don't lose! Try to keep the base intact.

    each pelican is carrying HEV's?

that dosn't make sence... cause it would only be able to carry 2.... a 2 man squad isn't a squad...

how bout the HEV's are from orbit? like normal?

thats a tactical nightmare i see no way to win at all maybe survive long enough to get others out of there but win no way and even if you had the advantage of terrain you would be killed in tide of enemys

If failure is inevitable, fail spectacularly.

    Re: Tactical Battles

the tanks are tasked with taking out the AA batteries in a frontal assault.... but this assault is only a bluff designed to get the slower shooting wraiths to concentrate fire on them while they blast at groups of grunts and elites that rush foward expecting (because of all of the commotion) a large scale battle....

the tanks after drawing the attention of the enemy fall back out of range of the wraiths... yet close enough to keep hammering on the covenant troops  forcing them to advance into the vally out of the saftey of the base to try and kill them....

the tanks eventually stop at the other end of the vally on top of a hill... where the ODST's have dug in tank pits and have built a barricade. they have the warthogs in reserve to run a hit and run attack on the enemy infantry... and to hit and run the wraiths if any are still alive at this point.

after the warthogs have completed their first pass through the enemy assault they are tasked with getting back to the top of the hill with the 6 marine squads and to keep hammering the enemy.

at this point the shortswods are supposed to fly low and bomb the rest of the covenant attack to smithereens.. but not come close enough to the covenant camp to risk damaging it.

the hawks with their weaker guns and long range attacks take out each anti air turret from afar with assistance from the warthogs and tanks which have now moved farther up the canyon to help with the real attack.

the ODST's in the HEV drop pods are now launched to drop in directly behind the tanks and warthogs where 4 of the other ODST squads are now stationed... the now 6 squad strong attack splits and hits the flanks while the tanks contunue to pound enemies in the center....

the pelicans now come into play.... with the AA destroyed they land at the unportected rear of the base and the marines launch their attack..... if nessacary the pelican will fire some missiles (not near key areas) and provide air support along with the hawks....

the entire time (other than the bombing) the shortswords are tasked with destroying any covenant air support or land support

marines are ordered not to kill engineers... and they are used to fix up the destroyed covenant vehiles and anti air... and any other destroyed key structures.... the marines set up a stronger defence with their newly aquired vehicles... the engineers are then disposed of..... and wait for support and pickup

    Re: Tactical Battles

    I am the awesome Covenant.

I would have all 2000 grunts dig a very large hole 900 miles away straight into the UNSC base. The tunnel will be wide enough to fit 3 Scarabs (even though there not in this mission). Then right when they were a few inches away from the surface the seraphs would burst straight up from the ground followed by the 100 ghost and 10 phantoms filled with a lot of Elites. Grunts would just run up. The last to go through would be the 50 Wraiths bombarding the Command Center First, then the barracks, then the armory  to cause a mass detonation of AP. We win.
