Chapter 6
Wrex impatiently bobbed. The roar of the cavalry was deafening. Bugles sounded, and archers opened fire. Many horses at the front went down, dragging their riders with them. Screams of pain sounded across the battlefield, distant and wailing. On the battlefield, wooden stakes had been stuck in the ground, when the cavalry reached the second post from the wall; the forces would run back through to the cavalry stoppers. The cavalry had just passed the third post from the wall, another wave of arrows scattered into their midst. The Captain in charge of the cavalry was struck in the ribs. Leaking blood, he fell from the horse, being trampled by his countrymen from behind. The cavalrymen gave a great cry and lowered their spears, lances, shields and whatever other weapons they had, as they passed the second post.
The bugle was short. A blast only to alert the army. There was a great, collective movement as the first four lines suddenly ran back. The cavalry reached the closest post to the wall, and in a few seconds, hundreds of horses were leaping over the small defense. Wrex struggled to get past the milling crowds of his countrymen. He knocked a Dwarf to the ground and propelled himself ahead as the first sounds of combat reached his ears. He saw the wooden stakes in front of him. Armour and weapons jingling, he jumped over the stake in his path and waited a few metres behind it. He couldn’t see the cavalry as the remaining troops were running back.
Bello felt the weight of the enemies’ mace beat down on his shield. He waited until he felt another impact, and suddenly swung his shield to the right. He swept away the mace and now had the man defenseless. He wasted no time in plunging the sword through his chest. The rider fell from his horse, Bello’s wound streaming with blood. He turned to run again, needing to reach the stakes. He got two steps before he was knocked down again. The rider quickly dismounted from his horse and ran straight at Bello, swinging his short sword in a wide arc. Bello reacted quickly and covered his torso with the heavy shield. The short sword smashed at the shield with all the wielders might. There was an ear splitting smash, and pieces of the short sword hit the floor around Bello. He quickly stood and saw his attacker on the ground, stunned by the impact. Bello ran him through, spilling his guts. He spat out a mouthful of blood and continued running.
