Star Wars Battlefront 2 has a multiplayer option that is similar to this but more basic. It is called Galactic Conquest.

You start off with a map of the Galaxy and a single fleet of ships. You move that fleet around to control checkpoints etc. Once your fleet encounters the enemy it switches to a mixture of first person shooter and RTS.

In battle, you are the commander but you are just one unit among hundreds of infantry and vehicles that are simultaneously fighting. It works this way both in space battles and planetside.

As the game progresses you can build more fleets and different kinds of soldiers, weapons, and special abilities.
