Not really. Bungie most likely went with plasma weapons because lasers are almost cliche now. As for Marines, that's not reallu uncanny. I mean, the new battle suit their working on for the military kinda looks like that.

Kinda looks like it, it almost looks exactly like the new uniforms they're designing, i can't find the exact article but it's on military.com and if you've played ghost recon you've seen them.
