most likely the artifact is of the type found on cote d'azure (halo fall of reach) it is probably a map toi a halo. or following the ridle like story pattern of halo a map to the map on cote d'azure that leads to halo. also the covenant wouldn,t glass the planet unless the artifact was a captured or b taken away by the unsc. they killed a hunter pair at reach because it fired at the spartans while they had an artifact
