I say escape.

And when you're going to kill of a character you usually want to make them liked in some aspect, so the reader can be engaged further. It grabs the reader's attention when a kind or friendly character is abruptly killed. You will see things like this many times in my story.

I'm still debating with myself if Hans should die... He is going to be the main German character. I have a main Italian, Japanese, American, British, French and Greek. The Greek character is just a small part, he will only appear in the section that deals with the invasion of Crete.

Captured.

Being captured can really bring out much more in a person--that's when they are really themselves and it can really bring along character development.  Every running away scene is the same--run to the forest, some random lady hides you for a while, you make a friend and you escape back to Germany or something.

i like it and i think its great, you get him captured so the readers can see hans breakdown, then we'll emphasize with him.

captured or escaped, Hans is a survivor. that line will NOT die.
i personally like escape. i feel there's often too many, "break out" scenes in FF. however, they have their place.
but altimately, it's up to you, OB.
