Halo: Pioneer (FF) *Completed* Parts 1-26

Here's my first crack at this. Feel free to criticize or flame....

In the early years of Colonization to the unknown worlds a ship and its crew set off on a mission to find a new place to call home. A private company, known as the Hexil Corporation, is the sole provider of financial and military support to the three-ship convoy. The medium cruiser, Pioneer, is suplimented with two verra-class fighters. Though small for a colony project, the crew is seasoned and eager to begin....

The faint whisk of air that reached his face brought him back to reality. Captain Jonas Relo opened his eyes to see his second-in-command standing in the doorway. "Lieutenant, have we arrived in system?" Relo asked as he proped himself up on his right arm.

"We have, Sir. We didn't expect our entry into Aegis to be so soon." Lieutenant Ian Harper looked down at his hands and opened them.
"Sir, we have done our initial scan of the system and no sign of signal nor vehicle traffic."

Jonas wiped away the last remnants of tiredness from his face with his left hand and sat up on the edge of his bed. "Good. I'll be on the bridge shortly." He stood up and looked outside his viewport to see a vast array of blackness punctuated by a single bright point, the star Aegis. "Well, this is the farthest any colony ship has made." ...and no one will barely hear a word about us back on Earth. He turned to face Harper and smiled, "Let's make ourselves a home."

    **********

With the resounding thump of boots hitting the deck, Captain Relo forced himself to walk briskly without appearing to hurry. Everyone aboard Pioneer had woken up, dressed themselves, and were now quickly making it to their stations causing the corridor to seem more like a marketplace than a colony vessel. They had all recently come out of the cryo-pods just two weeks ago and most were resuming natural function, but some, like Relo, never took to the sudden change as well as others. The Captain had seen his fair share of conflict in his life. Even at the age of 34 he had his scars to confirm he was the veteran in which his file spoke.

As the rest of the crew settled in, Lieutenant Ian Harper detached himself from a wide-range spectrum analyzer and came to the Captain's side as Relo entered the bridge. "All stations are checking in and will be ready in two minutes. Bringing the ship around."

Relo nodded and made his way to the large panoramic view of the system. From his cabin he had only a small section to gaze, but from here he found the beauty of the multi-colored nebulae that framed the system to be fantastic. Deep purple and orange highlighted with green  made the entire bridge fall silent. Jonas could not help but smile as his officers and crewmen took in the awe of Aegis.

It had been seven years in the making, but the Hexil Corporation's promises of a place worth the journey had come to fruition. Hexil had began its project as an open invitation to the public to prove that a private sector company could colonize just as efficiently as the government. The Corporation made sure to supply the ship with personnel of military background and advanced training capacities. Through miles of red tape and regulations tying up military-grade surplus, Pioneer was custom constructed to fit the role of a colony vessel that housed enough weapons and supplies to start a small war on one of Jupiter's moons. What helped make it unique was the ability to deploy two of the new Verra-class fighters from underside the ship's keel. The new fighters were the latest in Hexil design boasting a scaled-down version of the MAC gun as well as a improved thrusters for superb atmospheric flight.

A console beeped and the crewman stationed at the long-range scanners called out as he read the information scrolling down his screen. "Captain, I'm picking up some faint, very weak signal coming from the second planet out."

"That must be the probe. After several years, I'm impressed its beacon is still transmitting."

    "Sir?" asked Lt. Harper.

"That probe was originally designed to inform Hexil of any habitable planets and send the location and atmospheric readings back," explained Relo. "Its beacon programming was an added-on feature that was to last for ten years. With all the loose ends and delays, that probe has well outlasted its life expectancy."

The helmsman caught the Captain's nod and set course for the second planet. Relo could not ignore the ice in his stomach. There's little chance that probe would still be operable. He took his seat in the captain's chair and pushed aside any reservations he had about investigating the signal.

    Halo: Pioneer (FF) Part II

    Part II

She set her food tray down in the slightly crowed cafeteria and managed to fit on the end of a table mostly filled with security officers. Few gave her any notice, but the ones that did offered a glance with a malicious undertone.

Kasan Abrams was the civilian liaison for Hexil and not very well liked around the ex-military types. Back on earth she had been a member of an intelligence organization, United Global Intelligence. The UGI was the government's attempt to share intel reports across every country and military group to strengthen ties by making information on all types of issues public knowledge. Its success was more or less mediocre and they dissolved the organization after a few years of small conflicts erupting from disputes about reliability and favoritism. Kasan was in special operations, and trained in various methods of intel gathering. Although she had left UGI several years ago, some military personnel aboard Pioneer harbored suspicions about her spying on them and reporting to the captain. While she could endure passive disdain, Kasan Abrams performed her duties more out of obligation than enjoyment. When they respect my position, they'll respect me, right?

She sighed and started on her meal. She was a long way to "respect". Even the civilian families hired to colonize their new world were unsure of Abrams, but Captain Relo assured her that as soon as they arrived to the Aegis system and her role in the operation became more required there would be connectivity. So far it feels like the wrong ends of a magnet to me.

Kasan was almost done with her breakfast when her comm beeped. She fished it from inside her jacket pocket, "Abrams here."

"Good morning, Kasan. I trust you are fully functional?"

Kasan rolled her eyes and planted her elbow on the table and cradled her head on her palm. Lieutenant Ian Harper had been none too subtle to hide his increased playful banter with Kasan. She tried to downplay his advances and avoid him when possible. But since "the thaw" the captain was fairly busy organizing the ship that she had been reporting to Harper these past few days. "Yes, Lieutenant, thank you," she said in an almost muted voice. The exchange made a few of the officers close by give a smirk as they continued looking down at the food on their trays.

"Splendid. The captain would like to see you on the bridge." Harper explained and paused for a few seconds, long enough to hear a background hum of conversation. "Would you like an escort? I could--"

"No, that will not be necessary," she said as she hastily stood up and took her tray to the counter. Wiping her hands off on her pant legs she kept a steady pace as she walked down the main corridor. Kasan tied her long, wavy black hair in a makeshift ponytail and headed for the bridge. She considered herself fairly plain-looking which helped her disappear in any crowd and become anonymous. Her striking green eyes almost gave her an exotic look that matched her slender frame. Why the LT would find me most desirable makes his pursuit of love, or lust, that much creepier. She shook her head in disgust at having thoughts of him, in any context, fill her mind. She had a duty to fulfill here. Even if no one cares.

    **********

The bridge doors opened with a quietness that brought a smile to Kasan face. Hexil Corporation had pulled out all the stops with Pioneer. Even the food here was bountiful thanks to the agro-garden that supplied the foodstuffs. It was developed to be easily transported wherever the colony would begin. Kasan's smile quickly died when the LT approached her from the right.

Ian Harper opened his mouth to speak when Captain Relo spoke from across the communications officer's station, "Ah, good to see you, Miss Abrams."

Kasan glanced once at Harper and started for the main viewport as Jonas signaled with his hands to meet her there. He joined her side as Lieutenant Harper kept his distance three steps back and to the right of the captain. "I finished logging the reports of the psych evals, per your request. Everyone is a bit anxious, but overall I'd say the entire ship is behind you."

"Thank you, Miss Abrams. But I didn't request your presence here for a summary of your report." Jonas gestured to the planet growing ever so slightly in view as they approached. "This is the place that Hexil deemed 'more than adequate' to colonize. I'm going to send our two fighters to recon the planet and find the exact location of our probe." Relo leaned in and gave her a flat smile, "our sensors are having difficulty pinpointing its whereabouts."

Kasan turned her head to the sensors station and found the crewman staring up at them, swallowed visibly, and quickly went back to what looked like needless typing. "Sir, does that make sense? If I recall the specs on that probe, it shouldn't even still be functioning."

The captain shifted noticeably and gave the slightest nod. "That's why I'm sending our fighters in first and not Pioneer. If everything checks out OK, I would like you to accompany the Lieutenant here dirt side along with the initial recon team, pending there's no danger to report from Verra One and Two." He turned to face her, "as soon as a defensive perimeter is setup and a local headquarters, you and Harper will lead the team."

So this was the first move. Kasan thought back to her multiple briefings she had with Hexil about her role in all this. "Liaison" was a loaded term, that she was sure. With her background they said she would be called upon to "step outside her comfort zone" when the mission called for it. She had read Jonas Relo's file and knew he would never jeopardize the crew or put her or any civilian at risk of harm that the security detail could not prevent. With that confidence in the captain, she took and deep breath and exhaled. "It would be my pleasure, Captain. I'll get my gear ready."

"Very well. I've already sent a personnel and supplies list to your quarters. It will be a joint operation with the Lieutenant here, so make sure you go over protocol and procedures with him and the rest of your team." He paused and stepped to the side to look both Ian and Kasan in the face. "We are not expecting any danger on the planet, but expect to adapt to the situation. I trust both of you know that, and I will inform you of the fighters' recon report. That is all." The captain turned back to view the lovely view, all serene and colorful, as both Harper and Abrams departed for their separate quarters.

    **********

Both of the two-manned Verra-class fighters disengaged from the underside of Pioneer and headed for the planet. All four pilots had been in their simulators for the past week, brushing up on their skills with the newly designed craft. With over 30 years of experience between the four veterans, Captain Relo had every confidence in the four men.

"Alright, gentlemen. Let's keep this by the book," announced Lieutenant Brice. As lead pilot for Verra One, he was the commanding officer of the flight unit. "Sensor linked established. Visual and topical scanning feed locked in." He keyed the process into his flight computer and set course for an equatorial orbit.

From first glance the planet looked to be a smaller version of Earth. With only half Earth's mass and no moons, its atmosphere looked to be normal for a planet that size. The world had land covering two thirds of the surface with a deep blue ocean covering the rest. The land ranged from a dusty brown to rich green and snow-capped mountains raised among the upper northern regions. There were highlights of purple and pink throughout the green lands and some sections in the southern hemisphere were shades of red and brown.

"Entering atmosphere now." Brice leveled out his ship and looked over to see Verra Two duplicating his maneuver. They continued on till they reached just below the lowest setting clouds. "Sensor readings show breathable air with no trace of airborne pathogens." At least Hexil was right about this place being a so-called paradise. Lieutenant Brice had his qualms about Hexil because he didn't necessarily agree with it's stance on a couple things; even when they approached him to be the lead flight coordinator, and deposited a generous wage into his account back home, he signed on somewhat reluctantly. However, he trusted his men and Captain Relo, whom he had served with him on previous occasions.

Captain Relo's voice came through the comm, "Lieutenant Brice, finish your orbit around each polar region and then approach the approximate probe location; we now have it centered just north of the equator. Sending you the coordinates now. Everything looks fine and proper from up here." The captain paused briefly, "we are picking up random anomalies and life forms on the surface. Proceed with caution, Brice. We don't need to rush things."

"Aye Aye, sir." Brice pulled his flight stick over to the right and dove down toward the southern polar region.

    **********

Jonas Relo scratched the back of his head and walked over to the crewman minding the sensors and radar station. After the earlier confusion he seemed to have composed himself back into a professional demeanor. "What did the computers give you for analysis of the signal anomalies that the fighters transmitted back?"

The sensors officer spoke without taking his eyes off of his monitors, "Sir, the analysis says they are oscillating frequencies that are changing at such a rapid rate that it made it almost impossible to find the probe in all of the white noise, so to speak, but are so faint as to not register beyond the atmosphere of the planet. That's why we were able to locate the beacon signal after Verra One made its preliminary orbit."

"And what of the anomalies? I don't want those ships circling around a hostile environment."

"Sir, their fluctuation in frequencies would lead to believe they are either malfunctioning machinery scattered over the surface, or some form of communication we are not yet familiar with."

The Captain squinted at the readout on the monitors as he circled around the station. Leaning forward the computer beeped once and displayed the latest batch of analysis examining the anomalies. NEW CATERGORIZATION OF LIFEFORMS DETECTED. BUILDING DATABASE. Both Jonas and the crewman looked at each other then turned to face the screen. The screen zoomed out and gave a grid pattern to the planet as the orange dots that represented the new lifeforms were slowly added with the green dots that were the known lifeforms. They numbered in the thousands and you could hear a hush resounding over the bridge and the main viewscreen displayed the information.

"Well, ladies and gentlemen. It looks like we are not alone in this system after all." The captain straightened up and looked over his bridge crew, "we need to find out what's going on down there. Inform Harper and Abrams and their unit to report to the ready room. I'll be joining them shortly." So much for colonization and a new life. Why the hell didn't Hexil tell us about this place? He marched out onto the main corridor with the ice returning to his stomach.

Re: Halo: Pioneer (FF) Part III

    Part III

"So, we don't know what they are?" asked Ian Harper as he planted his hands on the back of his chair. "Sir, what are we expected to do now? Obviously we just can't take over the planet and kick out whoever or whatever calls it home."

Jonas paced back and forth at the head of the small conference table. Scattered throughout the ready room was the recon unit; Harper and Abrams were opposite on each side closest to the captain. "What would you suggest? That we turn around and go home?" Jonas folded his arms and looked down. "No, Lieutenant, we are thousands of light years away from the nearest habitable system, and the last thing the UNSC want's is 4000 people from Hexil moving in unannounced."

"Captain, I'm starting to believe that Hexil didn't tell us everything they knew about this place." Harper tightened his grip on his chair enough to make indentations of his fingers. "Why send us out here only to find Aegis already populated?"

Kasan leaned forward in her chair and put her elbow on the table. "What you have to understand is the data Hexil received is almost 10 years old." She looked around the room at all present and suddenly felt less confident about what she was about to say. "It could be those lifeforms we detected arrived after the probe sent its transmission."

"Or it could be the probe's arrival awoken these lifeforms."

All heads in the room turned to face the quiet voice that just spoke. It was a young communications tech assigned to the unit. He tried to meet the multiple stares he was getting, but bowed his head to look at the table and scratch some nonexistent smudge.

"That might very well be the case, Tech Specialist Roberts. In any case, we need to check it out. We're not even sure if they're sentient. The reports from Verra One and Two have come back and the area surrounding the probe is void of any life larger than a field mouse," the Captain explained.

"We're still going down there?" Abrams and Harper asked in unison.

Jonas nodded his head. "What we do from here on out is pure initiative. If any of you feel that you cannot perform your duties then you will be assigned new ones. I'm not about to announce to the civilians that their dreams of a new life may never come true. Most of your families are onboard with us and have left everything behind." Jonas sighed and unfolded his arms. "This was to be a voyage that defied the preconceived notions about Hexil. Whether they are true are not currently remains to be seen to me. We took a leap of faith coming out here on their word, and I for one hope to stretch it a little further. We are a self-sustaining colony vessel. It's time we start acting independently."

    **********

The dropship came in fast and hot, slipping below the cloud cover. Escorted by the two fighters, it landed a mere 100 meters from the probe. The commandos filed out first creating a semi-circle around the exit ramp. It was currently midday and the weather was almost tropical for being so landlocked. There were few trees in the area and the grass was fairly short and stubby. The sensors crew continued to scan the area as Harper and Abrams waited inside the ship.

"No visual contacts," reported Sergeant Thomas Hill, as he came inside the hold to stand before the lieutenant. "Scanning reveals no immediate indigenous lifeforms for a 200 meter radius."

"Is that odd?" asked Kasan. "I mean, they would have scattered when we dropped in...."

"Must have realized we want the probe," suggested Harper. "As long as they don't bother us, that's fine with me. Sergeant?"

"We are deploying automated sentry platforms leading up to the probe. If there's anything that tries to attack us, we'll activate them and form up back at the ship." Hill cleared his throat. "Whenever you are ready, Lieutenant."

"Very well. Miss Abrams? Care to join me?" Harper said with a smile.

Kasan pulled out her sidearm and locked in a magazine. She had been trained in firearms of all sorts back in her days with UGI. She returned the pistol back to its holster. "Let's just keep this professional, shall we Ian?"

If the sergeant noticed the subtle disdain in her voice he did not show it. "Follow me."

They approached the probe's site at a steady pace with the heads of commandos constantly turning to scan the area. Hexil had equipped each with a communicator attached to the left ear and wrapped around the left eye giving a real-time, first-person perspective of what each saw. The information was transmitted back to Pioneer where the bridge crew could monitor the situation firsthand.

Thomas Hill raised his left hand in a fist and everyone held their position. "Lieutenant, Ma'am, you might want to take a look at this." Hill motioned with his automatic rifle at the crater and the trail that led off to a rocky cliff.

"It must have impacted here and then something dragged it off to that rock face." Kasan kneeled down to examine the dirt. "The probe would have made over a dozen orbits in atmosphere, and by design, settled in the most hospitable region of the planet conducive to vegetation and water, then transmit its findings back to Earth." She looked up at Harper who wore a worried look.

"Let's just secure the probe," Harper decided.

The team finished its trek to the probe and secured the perimeter. Its dilapidated state made Ian Harper question the probe's ability to transmit anything, but he chalked it up to Hexil engineering. The probe looked to have been beaten with sticks or rocks and the Hexil emblem was removed in places it was attached. "Looks like someone hates Hexil as much as the politicians back home," Harper half chuckled.

Kasan Abrams rubbed the scarred surface of where the Hexil emblem once laid. "These were removed using tools." She peared closer and noticed a reflective residue that flaked away with her touch. "Removed very carefully, and then the imprints on the chassis were beaten." She stood up and looking right at Ian, "it's almost as if there's conflicting motives behind it."

"Eh, not that big of a deal," Harper said as he waved his hand to the side. He looked back at the probe, "Captain Relo, we have secured the probe. It looks like some local primitives didn't like it burning up their atmosphere and beat the crap out of it. We are retrieving the data storage from it and should be able to transmit the files to you from the dropship. Orders?"

The Pioneer had come in atmosphere and Relo came through the ground team's headsets loud and clear, "There won't be anything more in those data files than what we haven't already discovered ourselves. Unless...." The captain trailed off for a second. "Harper, did the probe still have its visual sensor operable?"

"No, sir. They destroyed that as well, but any video it captured post-impact should still be on file." Ian took the storage device as the tech handed it to him. "We'll get it to you shortly, sir." Harper turned to Abrams, "Ma'am, care to take a look at this back at the ship?"

"No, Lieutenant. I'm going to stay here and see if we can find any clues about the attackers."

    "Okay. Sergeant Hill?"

"We'll divide our forces. Six of us will stay here with Miss Abrams, and the other six will escort you back to the dropship." He signaled squads Delta and Epsilon to head back with Harper.

    **********

Inside the dropship Harper played back the video recording for the sixth time. It only lasted 15 seconds and each time he watched it, the video became more disturbing. The sensor was tilted at a 45 degree angle and showed a brilliant, focused red light appear sweeping the ground just in front of the probe. It passed in front on the lens of the sensor, then it silhouetted a metallic form as the light shown off to the distance. The shape was too dark to make out in the dim lighting of evening. It then snapped back to blind the sensor and the playback ends in static.

As the entire bridge crew of the Pioneer watched, Captain Relo had to make some tough decisions. Do we take our chances with the planet? Or go into deep-freeze and head home? As he was thinking to himself, Harper's voice cut through his thoughts.
    "Sir, orders?"

    **********

Kasan Abrams continued her survey of the probe's hull and did find another emblem on the underside, this one untouched. As Kasan, along with the rest of the ground team, awaited the Captain's orders, she picked up the Hexil symbol and laid in her palm. She traced the design with her fingers to clear off the remaining dirt and dust.
A simple design. It was a solid ring with a beam of light coming from its base. Kasan shivered as the sudden breeze made this place more chilling.

This is great, good detail and nice use of language. Only a few mistakes were found. And I'm pretty sure that when colonisation of the far off planets started, it was with the UNSC, not the UN.

By the time the UN could focus on Colonisation, they had already changed to the UNSC. Before that, they were too busy fighting the Jupiter Moons campaign, the Rainforest Wars and the battle for Mars.

Offensive Bias:By the time the UN could focus on Colonisation, they had already changed to the UNSC. Before that, they were too busy fighting the Jupiter Moons campaign, the Rainforest Wars and the battle for Mars.

Gotcha. My only goal was to have this be a telling of a forgotten, independent Colony project that was never heard from again. But "historical" accuracy should be very important. So i figured i'll just replace the UN with UNSC to fit the timeline more apropriately.
    thanks
