A Short Story...

    “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” He finished, setting the book onto the small wooden table that sat below his old chair. The old man looked out the window of the one room apartment. The moon was rising, night had fallen. The stars were discolored from orbital fire, star ships screamed overhead unheard. The old man then returned his gaze to the three children in front of him.
    “Time for bed kids, we have a early day tomorrow.”
A small fire burned near the children, and the old man. The only comfort they truly had, the prefabricated apartments were not insulated, making the chilly nights even colder on the hard wooden floors, four small mats lined the sides of the room perhaps the most comfortable spot in the house was the mats. The metal walls that surrounded them amplified the howling winds. Things were not what they once were, the small comforts of suburban life had been torn away by the horrors and utter destruction of war.
    The kids all in unison wined. “Ah do we have to go to bed??”
The Grandfather smiled, and chuckled. “Yes you do. Imagine if your father was here right now what would he say?”
With that the three children got up, running to the only bathroom to get ready for a nights sleep. If the planet lasted another night anyways…
