I'm a beginner, but willing to learn...

Hey guys, HW is the first RTS game I've ever played and I enjoy it immensely. However, I am still quite crappy at it. I don't have Gold Live, so I've been playing against AI, and on automatic I got as high as 80 but am now around 65 difficulty. I win against the AI on heroic a fair bit, but nothing seems to me to be consistent, and I have no sense of when I won a particular match because of something deliberate versus just an "accident." I am certainly willing to learn, but am having a number of pretty big issues. I would also appreciate any kind of advice on how to LEARN to play this kind of game versus actual tactics or strategies to use.

    1) I am having major problems controlling the behavior of individual units. For example if I have a Warthog that I command to attack something, it may move right next to the SOB while shooting at it, rather than take a more advantageous position. Any tips for doing this kind of "micromanaging"?

     2) Frequently, I find that sometimes my units are dead pretty much right after I build them. I think this is a combination of two things 1) building the wrong units. I sometimes get nervous and spam infantry, even though I am being attacked by 5-10 wraiths, instead of calmly building an airbase and building hornets or building Spartans to jack their vehicles. 2) not controlling my units effectively... see above

     3) Because of issue number 2, I sometimes find myself in a situation where an attack of mine has been repulsed, and now I am being attacked by the arbiter and a bunch of other units, with little to no resources. A better understanding of this situation and how to avoid it are necessary for me to improve further.

     4) Any tips on effective scouting? I can see how important this is with a human player. Going onto point 1) I find that my scout, usually a warthog gets killed frequently. Any tips on effective scouting would also be great.

    Thanks for the help!

Re: I'm a beginner, but not stupid...

Ugh... for scouting take your warthog and click him to the back of the base so he runs pass and evades attacks of his army. Then when he stops moving retreive him back to a safe location near enemy base.

If you click all units you can select individual squads with the left trigger i believe. I am also having a hard time with calling local units, 99% of the time i click all units with a scout rushing and to find that the scout is with my army.

If you got rushed, someone else had mention a very good method. Lock down your base, once you get a sizeable army, unlock them.

Always keep an eye on your eco.

Practise makes perfect.... or near perfect.... practise is good LOL

    I apologize.

    But I'm not sorry.

And I meant all of it.

    Okay, I don't apologize

When you start a game/match, send your ghost/warthog near their base and collect supply crates. You can get some supplies while you scout them. Practice on AI, get familiar with using UNSC and Covenant units. Learn how they work, researchs for example. Use the controls to your advantage, such as the d pad tabbing between troops/bases.

If you play UNSC loop around their base a few times with the warthog, don't forget to collect supplies. Common things to do early is to: Warthog rush, minimum requirement is chain guns. If you do focus on slower training units, use field armory's reserves research, lower troop train time, which helps alot. Turrets are sometimes vital to defense, such against wraiths rail gun turrets help, send some "fodder" units while turrets dish out the damage. For arbiter if he uses rage, use your disruption bomb and use flamethrowers, he should go down quick. Seeing as you normally play UNSC, take advantage if their leader powers. After the first 5 minutes or so, thing about getting a second base to increase supply production. Researchs most of the time are key to winning. Marines RPG take easily take out a wraith(no shield) with maybe 5 marines. The comes back to defending, lock your base and make troops. Once you got a decent amount trained, unlock your base, they come out pretty fast compared to training. Keep practicing eventually you'll know how to play this game with no problem.

Re: I'm a beginner, but willing to learn...

on the contrast of everyone being a d**k, i for one, would like to welcome you to the forums, and i hope you enjoy your stay.

as for tactics. . .  looks like for the most part you just need to stay calm and take a second to figure out what to do. Also, if being attacked by a leader, DONT forget about your leader powers. Especially the disruption bomb. It can make a world of difference.

as for scouting...... i usually take one warthog and drive it right into the middle my enemies base.  It gets destroyed, hell ya, but it lets you see their base and the area around it for a few seconds to see what their building, doing, and how to counter it. Do this every few minutes, because if they had a lot of units, and the next time you come around there all gone...... prepare for a battle of semi-epic proportions

edit: after reading the above post, i should also say only suicide-mission the warthog once your done collecting supply crates.

Re: I'm a beginner, but willing to learn...

so here's another thing I noticed about the way I tend to play. I dunno if it's weird or not. I rarely, if ever get past tech level 3. Of course, this may be because I usually play in chasms or blood gulch, where the game goes much faster. One of implication of this is that because I usually get to 2 quickly, the primary units that I use in the early game (w-hogs and infantry) units have a relative advantage over their opponents because I teched up quickly, but in the later game, because I don't tech up enough my units end up relatively weaker. This may also be why they tend to get killed instantly later in the game.

When I win, it tends to be quick. I build 5-6 hogs and scout with them, then once I have gunner I kill the arbiter and start attacking the base while building more hogs.infantry or cyclops (if Forge) and moving them up to kill the base. If I kill the base I win, if the attack is repelled I usually lose.

I may need to get LIVE and play against human players in order to really learn to play.

Re: I'm a beginner, but willing to learn...

there are some different things you can do...

-to start off try building a reactor, supply pad, barracks, in that specific order!, while using your scout to gather minerals throughout the map.

-locking in 5-10 unit of marines set in your mainbase as emergency backup helps.

-using forge give you an advantage because he already starts with heavy supply pads.

-as soon as your reactor is build research gunner warthogs,>>>>>most people dont reasearch anywhere past grenadier warthogs. little do they know gauss warthogs do a great damage to infantry and bases, and many people dont take them for granted..

-pay attention to who your enemy leader is, someone using anders will most likely focus on making hawks>>>making a fleet of wolverines or infantry will take a dump on her hawks. using buffed out hornets and vultures will be effective againts forges grizzlies,

-HW triangle- Infantry beats Air beats Vehicle beats Infantry

-your spartans dont have to steal enemy vehicles...just build any vehicle unit or hornet pick a spartan and pick Y on any of those vehicles (just as if you were stealing it)

-place your military inf.veh.air etc throughou the map around your claimed area...they will most likely come in combat with an enemy attack, rather than have an all out attac on your base, doing this will give you a chance to see what they enemy is using and you can hopefully counter using the triangle.

    - use your scout as said above to gather any external resources and send your scout to the back of your enemies base and watch for what he makes. hence using the triangle...

    hope these help.

An easy fix for your warthog dying is to cue commands. If you hold the x button down for a few seconds it cues the command. So cue the warthog through a big circle behind his base and back to safety.

I haven't explained it well but it's easy to do, hold x - move to a new spot hold x move hold x so and so.

This way the warthog never stops moving and is hard to attack.

Re: I'm a beginner, but willing to learn...

    I guys...

I'm pretty new but I wish to know... is there a way to counter rushing opponents? You see... I have kind of a passive gameplay... I take my time, enjoy the weather and build my units quietly, hoping I can get all my little freinds ready and reaserched to eventually send an only attack on my lovely neighbor's place...I have nothing against the fact that they can't wait for me to show up and stop by and say "Hello!" but... how am I supposed to play gainst someone who shows up 3 minutes after the beginning with 4 wraiths, 1 arbiter and 5 Hunter squads if I'm hardly finished building my supply pads?

     Can anyone help me?
