Chapter 1
New Mombasa’s Atmosphere
0900 Hours, October 20th, 2552
Cole’s helmet bucked hard and smacked right against the hull of the drop pod falling to quickly. He could feel the heat rising, despite his environmental controls in his suit trying to cool his body. His pod hit the atmosphere hard, with a teeth jarring rattle that shook the whole pod, of which seemed like a grinding noise. Cole gripped his harness tighter, turning his knuckles white under his gloves. His communication system in his helmet filled with a distressed male voice shouting that his parachute on the pod wouldn’t open and he plummeted to the ground. Cole watched the teams list, and saw Mark‘s name flicker off of it as he must of hit the ground without any slow to his momentum. Cole felt his spring to life as his pod lost speed to fast of what a average human couldn’t handle. But of course he wasn’t average, “I’m not average… I’m one of the best, I’m a ODST,” Cole thought to himself.
Cole switched frequencies on his comlink to his squads, making sure everyone was in check before they landed. It was going to be a rough one. “Delta, this is Staff Sergeant Cole,” He said as he pinged his squad to get their attention, “Prepare to engage upon landing, we’re hitting hard and fast. Out,”
Cole got pings back from his squad-His squad, they’re lives were in his hands-to acknowledge the order he gave them. He moved his hands slowly to the handles built into the sides of the pod, fighting the g-force. Cole heard the whine of oxygen and air that was all to familiar with him now, he was about to hit the ground. He flinched before hand, then the pod rocketed straight into whatever remained in the fought-out city. Cole hit the emergency button to his left and the pod’s door went flying a good twenty meters, crashing into a near by building with a thud. Cole stepped out, his battle rifle already aimed for targets. His dropped into a sudden role as a blue haze filled his HUD, and felt the heat wash over his face along with blisters forming. He heard the sizzle of the plasma against where he once was, and the air became ionized. He fired his battle rifle immediately without a thought at the guessed location of the fire.
He was awarded with blood curdling scream of a elite, and grunts rushed out ready to tear anything in their path for blood. The rest of his squad already disembarked, took up positions and opened fire, trying to hold the enemy at bay. Cole assessed the situation at hand quickly, scrolling through his squads bio, checking if everything was ok. He came to Mark, and made a quick mental note to mark him as KIA later. He resumed back to the present and he saw a grunt, plasma grenades primed in both hands obviously for what he thought was the greater good, charging at him in a killing frenzy. Cole brought his battle rifle to bear and quickly dispatched the grunt and ducked down behind a overturn vehicle before the grenades went off. A second sun seemed to form in his vision, and his face plate polarized instantly.
“Stacey, take that elite now!” Cole ordered her and motioned the rest of the squad for covering fire with a pump of his fist. The grunts seemed to start pulling back, after what seemed like a endless wave. Stacy crawled up next to Cole, SRS99C-S2 AMB Sniper Rifle, in hand which almost seemed to dwarf her in size.
“Stop moving you tricky bugger…” Stacey said followed by some cursing and fire, then fired again. The elite’s shields flared a brilliant orange, then died out right as the second bullet caught him square in the face. The grunts ran in chaos as the lost what to do, and their own senses. Stacey dropped the clip and slid a new one in with practiced efficiency. She slung it to her back, pulling out the standard issue M6C Magnum finishing off any grunt stragglers. Cole nodded to her for her ending the ‘welcome mat’ battle quickly.
Cole smiled, but of course had his helmet on, “Nice shooting Stacey. Alright, causalities?”
“Sir, we just lost Mark upon entry,” said David with a bit of sorrow in his voice, which seemed surprising to show as the squad XO, following up as a hardened Corporal, “We should move before more covies are alerted of our presents here.”
“Alright people, you heard the man! Thunder Fist rolling out!” Cole said. He formed up in front of the formation as the walked across the plaza they appeared to have landed in, and ruined for that matter. The other squad members of Delta mimicked his moves and formed up behind him, weapons raised for any threat that may come to them. Cole strode across the plaza easily, walking up to a building which seemed to lead to his RV point. Or so his HUD said. He took a step back from it, Delta forming up to the sides and behind Cole for rapid entry. Cole kicked the door in with a heavy thud and grunted as he made it splinter off it’s hinges. The squad rushed in, weapons drawing a bead on anything that moved. A brief flicker flashed through the corner of the room, and the next thing Cole knew, he saw a pair of eyes staring straight at him.
