    UNSC = Navy?

Ok first off I'm going from my extreeeemly limited knowledge of ranks and that the navy, army and air force all have slightlty different rankings right?

I was just wondering why does the UNSC use Navy ranks? (well at least i think it does). I know that throughout the books they refer to it as the navy but what about the sea navy or has that been made obsolete discovering space flight? I also get that they're space ships but then again they fly so shouldn't they be Air Force ranks. Then again since it is a new form of combat shouldn't it have its own unique ranking system.

Just wanted to know what everyone thinks

    Re: UNSC = Navy?

UNSC are mainly Navy / Marine Corps based ranks.  In the halo verse there are very small reports of Army military personel.   But even in real life the Navy / Marine Corps are the ones to get it done.    Navy Hold the Biggest Ships and fire Power while the marines infultrate shores (or in this case orbital defense grids)  and hold the ground for stronger and more powerful re-inforcements arrive.

    Re: UNSC = Navy?

UNSCDF = United Nations Special Corps Defense Force

UNSC = United Nations Special Corps

    UNSC = Marines

But there are obviously crew. Look at the Pillar of Autumn in Halo 1. There are crewmembers who aren't soldiers.

As for soldiers, I don't think Earth really uses soldiers anymore since this is supposed to be the uniting of humanity against a common enemy (the Covenant).

There is no actual Army, and the UNSCDF is comprised of marines and soldiers - like the Admiral on Cairo Station and Captain Keyes.

Master Chief is really the only soldier that can solidly be classified as a Marine - the other marines just look like they belong in the Army since they aren't really equipped as marines.

The ODST troopers are Marines - HALO jumpers, actually. And its funny that they end up HALO jumping on a Halo.

I hope this answers your question.

    Re: UNSC = Navy?

Ooh and as for ranks (from lowest to highest):

    - Private (e.g. Private Jones from H1)

    - Corporal (e.g. Corporal Perez from 'Outskirts')

    - Sergeant (e.g. Sergeant Johnson)

    - Lieutenant (I can't remember the character's name)

    - Commander (e.g. Commander Miranda Keyes)

    - Captain (e.g. Captain Keyes)

    - Admiral (e.g. the guy on Cairo station at the end cutscene of Halo 2 where MC is on the covenant ship headed for earth)

    United Nations Space Corps

and they use navy, because that's pretty much all that's really left, because all space ships are naval vessels

It's "Space Command" not Special Corps or Space Corps.

    Doles out the Harshness.
Use this. Know this. Love this.

    Re: UNSC = Navy?

nice sig.... and yea think of space as the sea. U need a navy to traverse it and a marine corps. to fight the battles. The army and airforce are stuck on earth...

    Re: UNSC = Navy?

Just so you have a reference point.

Marine ranks are EXACTLY the same as Army ranks, whereas Navy and Air Force are different.

I may make a couple of mistakes, but I'm trying to remember the rank structure from a military I didn't serve in.

    From lowest to highest.

    Non-comissioned members:

    Recruit.

    Private.

    Private 1st Class.

    Specialist.

    Corporal.

    Sergeant.

    Sergeant First Class.

    Technical Sergeant.

    Gunnery Sergeant.

    Another Sergeant rank.

    Master Sergeant.

    Sergeant Major.

Command Sergeant Major, highest ranking NCM.

    As for Officers.

Officer Candidate(student officer, still in Officer Candidate School).

    Second Lieutenant.

    First Lieutenant.

    Captain.

    Major.

    Lieutenant Colonel.

    Colonel.

    Brigadier General.

    Major General.

    Lieutenant General.

    General.

The "Big Cheese", for the USMC is Commandant, for the Canadian Forces he's the "Chief of Defense Staff".

The ranks for helicopter pilots in the Marine Corps and the Army are a bit different.

Instead of Sergeants, they have Warrant Officer, Chief Warrant Officer, and Master Warrant Officer.

They do have officers as helo pilots, but that's because those individuals went to OCS, whereas the Warrant Officers didn't, the WO's only had to pass flight training.

If a Marine Captain is on board a non-USMC ship, he's given a temporary promotion to Major, as by Maritime tradition, there can be only 1 "Captain" on the vessel.

Navy ranks are a bit weird, they've got:

    Lieutenant, Junior Grade.

    Lieutenant.

    Lieutenant Commander.

    Commander.

    Captain.

    "something" Captain.

Then there's 3 different Admiral ranks.

    And Commodore.

    The top guy is "Admiral".

The Non-commissioned, if I remember correctly, start with:

    Ordinary Seaman.

    Able Seaman.

    Leading Seaman.

Then there's ranks like "Boatswain", "Coxswain", and several others.

Plus, you have to keep in mind the seniority and the duties of the different officers.

I won't even think about typing out the ranks for the Air Force, because I don't remember them.

If anyone is interested, I can type up the ranks for the Canadian Forces, Land (commonly referred to as the Canadian Army).

I might even have the rank structures for the USSR, FRG, DDR, AIR, the British Army and Royal Marines, oh, and don't forget France, Belgium, Greece, Spain, and Turkey.

    I'm joking, by the way.

While I may still have that data, I'm not "flaky" enough to actually go dig it out and actually type it out.

    Later.

    Re: UNSC = Navy?

but, this IS the future where the NAVY is the dominant force

currently the marines have more army  based ranks because the army/MC tends to be the dominant force

    Re: UNSC = Navy?

    Navy Ranks

    (Enlisted Ranks)

Crewman (seaman, airman, construstionman, and medic)

    Petty Officer 3rd class

    Petty Officer 2nd class

    Petty Officer 1st class

    Cheif Petty Offficer

    Senior Chief Petty Officer

    Master Chief Petty Officer

    (Officer Ranks)

    Ensign

    Lt. Juniour Grade

    Leutenant

    Lt. Commander

    Commander

    Vice Admiral (lower)

    Vice Admiral (Upper)

    Admiral

Fleet Admiral (only in a time of war)  ---- in this case there are Many Fleet Admirals in the Halo-verse

Most of the UNSC mainly consists of Navy/Marine Corps Personnel. That goes for Enlisted and Officers as well.  Everyone how plays Halo (including my master chief)  seem to nit pick at the Ranks and Chevrons (Ranking Simbols),  Traditional  Dress uniforms, ect. a lot.  If you look closely, Srg. Johnson is wearing a P.O. 3rd class chevron on his hat.  I constantly have to remind my fellow Marine friends and shipmates that it's just a game, and that it's also future posibility.  Most of the Navy/Marine Corps today work hand in hand, very much like halo.  Hence why it's so popular in the military.
