I believe the term is subtle references.

The share some Mythos and common themes, but the two should be treated as seperate and taking place into completely different universes.

Bungie have confrimed they are not set in the same universe, so why do you still question it?

Cortana absorbed a HUGE amount of information in halo. even she herself thinks about how much time she has left because she absorbed all that info in the first Halo, so a lot of her life span was already used up
