Prologue
You know, I really hate Mondays.
“Get back here, freak. I’m gonna pound your face in!” It’s been an odd day, very odd indeed. I suppose it started this morning, with her. I shouldn’t have been so naïve, telling her I’d help out when I knew absolutely nothing about her, or what she wanted. ***, how could I be so stupid?
So you know what I did? I ran. I ran as far and as fast as I could. I’m not out of shape or anything, but I started slowing down near the quarter mile mark. I stopped, hoping that the larger man hadn’t followed. Oh was I in for a surprise as I turned around and saw the man running down the sidewalk. Wait, not a man, not anymore at least. So there I was, standing in the middle of the sidewalk with a troll bearing down on me.
No matter what anyone tells you, I did not scream. Especially not like a little girl as I scampered down an alley. The creature followed me, gaining ground. Now I was tired, my breathing coming in staggered bursts. Then I tripped over the edge of a dumpster. Real smoothly, I stood up, dusted off my greatcoat and turned to face the oncoming beast. It ran up to me, and then reared up, bellowing. “You’re going to wish you’d never meddled, wizard. You should have left it alone.”
I gave him my best straight face, and then smiled cockily. That’s when he swung. His fist hit my face, bone cracking under the pressure. I spun, landing back down on the pavement. My vision began to blur, blood red mixed with black. The last thing I remember was a women leaning over me, her face hard with concern, fear, and surprise. That’s when I blacked out.
Yep, just a usual day in the life of Jonathan Featherwind, spell caster, demon slayer, monster vanquisher, and all round wizard. I provide help when asked and blow stuff up when threatened, but only if I have to.
Who knows, maybe today can still turn out for the best?
