When the game came out, people wanted to buy it because it told a piece of Halo history. The history of Harvest, one of the most famous battles in the Human-Covenant War. So wouldn't it be great if we were on Harvest for more than 1/5 of the game? But no, there had to be a crazy plotline that involved the Flood that is not canon in any way. What happened to Harvest?

Well the UNSC repelled the Covenant and quickly abandonned the planet because they needed the military force elsewhere. That's what happened. Not to mention that most of Harvest was glassed anyway.

Harvest was famous because it was the first engagement between Humans and Covenant.
