    Re: reach?

reach was what, 50 years after the first contact with the covenent? or was it 30

This is where the convenant and the humans first make contact.

its about the first few encounters, not just one event

    Place it takes place on...

Does this take place on "Reach"? Or on a colonie before the fall of "Reach"?

Re: Place it takes place on...

Ok. So it is before the Halos, and Reach?

Re: Place it takes place on...

Yup, that is what the FAQ states, plus if you have seen the teaser you would notice several spartans, and most of them except Master Chief were killed off at Reach.

Re: Place it takes place on...

ok people some of you need to read before posting. Also there is no suck thing as a Spartan I program because the original Spartans are from ancient greece which it mentions in Fall of Reach. Hense the name Spartan II's. Like has been stated many times this game does not take place on harvest because Harvest was glassed right off the bat instead its the first time they actually fought the covenant on the ground. This is not a halo ring, it is not Reach and it is not Sigma Octanis which if I'm right was part of or close to the Inner Colonies. It is either a planet that was very lightly mentioned or one that was never mentioned. Also the there is a weapon that was short like the battle rifle before the actual battle rifle came out the MA2B which maybe those weapons in the game hense forth the fact that they have what looks like longer barrels. Also Bungie cares very much what goes on with it halo sotry and who ever said it the book is called the HALO Story Bible, so you were right.

    Master Chief:

Anyone who recently read the book I need you help.

I remember a planet in FoR in the Reach system that Master Chief send a squad of his men to defend.

I think it was Sigma Octanus. Anyone remember? I'm thinking that the planet in the trailer was that same planet that has a squad of Spartans on it.

Sigma Octanus isn't in the Reach System.

Also they first encounted the covi in the Harvest system, 2120 or something around there.

    Itsme112088:
Ok im a huge fan of all the books, but heres a free tip.  BUNGIE DOSE NOT CARE WHAT PEOPLE RIGHT!!!  They are not going to incorperate the books story line into this game.  Have you noticed that in First Strike that other spartans were found on reach and that was said to happen after halo 1, so it all goes to show you that, as usual, they are going to use their own ideas and not follow anyone elses.  If they did they could take credit and royalties.

     Wrong.

From the interview with the author on Bungie's own web site:

What aspect brings you the most complaints?

One complaint I hear a lot is that the novels aren’t canon and do not mesh with the game. From the very beginning the novels were designed to be optional, but official, material. Bungie didn’t want people to have to read the novels to follow the game. That would be silly. The novels are designed to be an official companion pieces, and if you read them you experience a richer back story and understanding of the Halo universe. This strategy, however, necessitated that references to the extra material be minimized in game so as to not confuse people who hadn’t read the books.

Just because the other Spartans (Fred, Kelly, Linda et.al.) are not in Halo 2 doesn’t mean Bungie has rejected them. They’re off doing something else...somewhere.

Re: Place it takes place on...

maddog, I would argue that there was in fact a SPARTAN-I program. ilovebees was a clever advertising bit done by Bungie, and one of the main characters' father is a Spartan 1. ilovebees takes place just before Halo 2, because it ends with the sirens on Earth telling of the Covenant attack. The original Spartans were just really hardcore soldiers with a lot of training, whereas the Spartan-IIs were augmented, and conscripted as 6 year old children.

Concerning the suit: I haven't seen this pointed out yet, but the original Mark V suit did not have shields. If they had shields, Sam would have been able to get off the Covenant ship in Fall of Reach, in fact, Sam wouldn't have ruptured his suit in the first place. It has been mentioned in other threads that the way the suit is structured indicates that it is older than the suit seen in Halo: Combat Evolved, and that it does not have shields. I believe the main point for this argument is the shoulder guard.

Concerning Harvest: Harvest fell, and the only forces that fought on it were forces in the immediate area, and they were all killed save for a lone ship. The ship didn't have Master Chief on it, or he wouldn't have been briefed on the Covenant.

Concerning Sigma Octanus IV: Sigma Octanus IV was a human planet, with a population center called Côte d'Azur. The Spartans landed on the planet, saved some survivors, then intercepted the Hunters with the rock from the Museum ([cough]Forerunner artifact[/cough]). It mentions in the book that Sigma Octanus IV, or at least the area around Côte d'Azur, was very lush. The Spartans sneak up on a group of Grunts in the forest. The Warthog trying to escape to the UNSC command post gets stuck in mud, then runs along a river trying to escape the Banshees. These are not things you find in a barren icey wasteland. However, like Earth, some planets have icey regions and tropic regions. I'd bet even Reach had cold harsh regions somewhere. However, on Sigma Octanus IV the UNSC knew the Covenant was coming, and thus they would not be surprised by the Covenant on the planet. Also, Sigma Octanus took place after the invent of shields (as best as I can remember) or we would have lost James to those Hunters. I only wish I still had the book (lent it to a friend who I don't see at all anymore) to confirm my memory...it has been about a year since I reread the books...

Concerning the other Spartans: There were 60 Spartans during training. If my memory is still functioning correctly, around 30 survived the augmentation and were fit for combat (about 5 or 10 were badly maimed and the rest died). In most of the engagements, the Spartans broke up into 5 man fireteams, so this supports the trailer.

Concerning Fred, Kelly, and Linda: Well, I believe Kelly is with Dr Halsey when the book ends. The rest of the...I beleive there were around 7 survivors including John that made it back to Earth, I'd guess they were stationed at different defense platforms. What would it matter if all the Spartans were on Cairo platform and it was held if every other platform was taken out with ease and Earth was still invaded? I would reason that Li and Will were stationed on the two stations that were destroyed in the beginning of Halo 2, if there were indeed Spartans on those (as I am sure there were more than 7 defense platforms). John was the only Spartan on the Cairo, so it stands to reason he was the only one on Miranda Keyes' ship when it jumped with the Covenant ship to Delta Halo. Thus, there would not be other Spartans on Delta Halo because only UNSC ship made it there just like with Alpha Halo.

Re: Place it takes place on...

Your thinking of the Mk IV armor. Also it rally isnt a big deal but I'm pretty sure there were 72 any way its somewhere between that. Oh I know there was a program that led up to the development of the Spartans but it was called something else. But that program I think it was the Orion Program was designed to test the power armor I'm pretty sure.  They maybe considered Spartan I's but they real are not. The original Spartans were around way over 600 years before the human covenant war.

600 years places you smack-dab in the middle of WWI and WWII.

I think there were SPARTAN-I's, but they were just fully-grown soldiers given augmentations.

Re: Place it takes place on...

117 your correct there were spartan Is they did not have access to MJOLNIR they had the same augmentations if not slightly obsolete comapared to spartan IIs and also if you read the books there even a possible 3rd group of spartans called Spartan IIIs. Maddog and Zues120 need to check their facts before starting Halo sacriledge

Edit: ok granted the project was called ORION but that does not mean they were not Spartan Is

Re: Place it takes place on...

The whole Spartan project was named for the Spartans of Greece who lived many years ago, but that does not mean the SPARTAN-II project was given the two because they came after them. The information from ilovebees is most likely to fallow the Halo Story Bible like everything else official.

Re: Place it takes place on...

Yes it does you guys are talking about the god damn orion project for crying out loud. And apparently you didnt read everything 117 because I said way before 600 years ago. LET ME REPEAT MYSELF THERE WAS NEVER A GOD DAMN SPARTAN I PROJECT BECAUSE IT WAS AN ATTEMPT TO RECREAT THE SPARTAN OF ANCIENT GREECE THEREFORE THEY WOULD BE SECOND GENERATION SPARTANS. You can not have two originals thats why. Man you guys have no brains what so ever. I'd even point out the fracking pages if I had my book but I dont.

Re: Place it takes place on...

The ORION project or the Spartan I program was the phase one of the Spartan Supersoldier program. Initiated in 2491, as an element of the ORION project not much is known about the first generation of warriors (their training, augmentation, goals, etc.).

The original Spartan Project was created to test genetic enhancements on soldiers. These enhancements were the precursors to the genetic enhancements used in the Spartan-II program. The mortality rate for those injected was high, this contributed to the failure of the program. Those who survived the injection(s) had a greatly increased rate of mental problems later on in life. It is not known at this time how many soldiers participated in this program, however it is mentioned that there are several offspring. Some of which were chosen for the Spartan-II program, others banded together to fight the Covenant.

However they were successful enough to garner the necessary consent and funding for a second phase, aptly named SPARTAN II.

    Lifted from Halopedia.

How many time do I have to post this crap. and anyways it is in the Halo bible as Spartan Is so don't argue and they are mentioned to a large degree in Ghosts Of Onyx
