Dont worry. The name Halogen may be dead but out mod sure as hell isn't. We're just in the process of talking out all MS's IP and getting a story into works.

Their not shutting us down for good.

    U1tramarine:

    Hi all,

You may know me, you may not but lemme just tell you a small story.

I was the leader of the Halo: Retreat and Retaliation mod for DoW, we also had other sister project such as the HaloGen mod for CnC Generals. One day Microsoft sent the old "Cease and Desist" order to HaloGen after 3 years of hard work from that team, we all took inspiration from this mod, and they were just about to release when they recieved the order.

Now our mods we non-profit, fan-based mods which we tried to pay tribute to the Halo universe. Now before you guys say something like "ha ha, well you should have expected this" attempts were made by both teams to contact both Microsoft and Bungie. I personally made 3 attempts. We never recieved replys from either. So we decided to continue. Now after a few years our work is now wasted. I have even recently contacted MS's IP department and they gave me the worst and most stupid email reply ever. (If you wanna see it, visit our forum)

So basically i just wanted to give a warning, if Ensemble Studios is acting without either company backing them, then they will be screwed. If you havent got the backing then stop now. If you have then by all means continue.

of course they do. they made a trailer and were held under microsoft's bussom. they wouldnt have showed it at x06 and frankie wouldnt have talked about it the way he did if it wasnt a liscensed third party halo game.

whoa i think  ijust went through the twilight zone or summin... wtf?

they killed themselves by not taking the proper procedures before starting the project.....the project was dead before it even started, and not because of MS.

LoL... so... M$ did not send a cease and desist?  you don't see the casuality of that?

like i have said earlier:  M$ had every the RIGHT to do that, but it does not mean it SHOULD have done that.  Its like saying a cop pulling you over because he could prove that you were over the speed limit by .001 miles per hour, and giving you a ticket for reckless endangerment.  You could fight it, and you'll prolly get acquitted, but the cop had the RIGHT to do it.

i think we can at least agree that it was a low blow that M$ did what it did, even though it had every RIGHT to do it.  you want to foster good relations with customers, and i seriously think that M$ owes those guys something for taking away their baby.  heck, just a letter saying "why can't we be friends" would be nice.  maybe a t-shirt.

back to the cop analogy, the proper cop response would be to pull you over and give you a warning for speeding.

its not like there isn't a way in this that all sides can be happy.

how the hell is this a low blow, or why SHOULDN'T MS have done this.....thats the whole point of a copyright in the first place, is so that you CAN do stuff like this when someone infringes on it....like i said before, ANY...i repeat, ANY company would've done the same thing, what don't all you fools understand about that? i'm sick and tired of you guys acting like MS is some big bully because they did this.

MS doesnt owe them squat, because THEY failed to get permission first, do you understand how that goes. MS doesn't go looking for people to give permission to, people have to go to MS to get it, and if they fail to do so before starting a project based around Halo, then that is their own damn fault, NOT MS'

You don't see other game companies shutting down mods do you? Did westwood stop the mod? Does lucas arts stop star wars mods? Does any one else shut down fan mods? Microsoft is stupid and arrogant. Even though bill gates is scared half to death trying to make up for his sins (donating so much money) his company is still crapping on the little guys.

are you serious...those we're mods FOR THEIR GAME....duuurrrrrrrrr, think about it for one second, just one, please

this is a mod for a NON MS game, do you realize what that means, that means it will have the potential to sell more copies of a game MS didn't make at the expense of infringment on THIER copyright....get it now?

Re: Reason HaloGen Had to Cease and Desist?

to bad microsoft didn't think shutting them down through, I am sure that once really hardcore fans that some how didn't have a computer of their own found out about it they would have bought one plus, if I am correct and they don't have the idea for Halo Wars as there own they had no legal ground to shut them down, unless the models were ripped, if they are built from the ground up then guess what they are not MS or Bungie property but instead something that just looks similar to a spartan or elite
