Re: UNSC Spirit of Fire (CFV-88)-What type of ship?

Carriers, today, weigh about 10 times the weight of a cruiser. Now, obviously, cruisers will be larger in the game, but that number is something to think about.

The Spirit of Fire is probably a carrier, because, since WW2, carriers have become the leaders of any battlegroup, since fighters are the most versitile strike arm in existance. Bungie has tried to keep some similarities between modern militaries and the UNSC. Also, carriers are more versitile then cruisers, fighters can not only attack ships, but also provide close air support to ground forces. A dedicated carrier is the only vessel that would have enough fighters to fulfil both roles.

Re: UNSC Spirit of Fire (CFV-88)-What type of ship?

ok, ill add some two-sense and speculation to this...

lets examine its Designation...CVF-88...that rules out being an experimental or only-one-ever, its the 88th in the series of ships. Its not a cruiser, cause if the UNSC had 88 cruisers EVER...they wouldnt have lost the war soo badly. If you look at the books, 'The UNSC's >Handful< of cruisers were delegated to gaurding the inner colonies'  Now, lets look some more...CV...that screams 'CARRIER!!!' to me...BUT, the F adds a little more detail. It could be a 'Fast Carrier' a 'Fighting Carrier' or any other thing your minds can come up with that starts with F. But if you think about it...if the Spirit of Fire carries all those ground forces, lets say a full wing of fighters, (normally 72 if you use the 12 fighter per squadron concept), maybe a few battalions of marines...I would say its most likely the leading ship in a small Fleet, cause we all know that carriers NEVER travel alone, they are so valuable they need protection. But then again, if they are that valuable....how did the UNSC afford 88? of just this class? O.o

Oh, and i almost forgot...the 'Destroyers have two guns so they should be more powerful' argument...

Destroyers sport 2 Frigate Class MAC guns, not the OMFGWTFPWNT sized cruiser guns. A cruiser only NEEDS 1 gun, cause it can fire multiple shots and each shot can punch through a covie's sheilds and hull just like a Super-MAC's can. And remember, if the pillar of autumn had a 3 shot MAC gun and over 500 archer missiles, that 'Merely' matched the other cruisers in the fleet...so when you think UNSC Cruiser, you best be thinking ownage in a floating box

UPDATE:Old one actually... Spirit of Fire is a colony ship modified/upgraded to a UNSC ship... so I am thinking it has alot of cargo space to transport troops. Probabaly a specialized planetary assualt ship?

Re: UNSC Spirit of Fire (CFV-88)-What type of ship?

This is kinda of his own thread...look through it

And where did you get the colony ship thing from?

    Last i heard it was a carrier/cruiser

And carriers in the halo-verse are rarer than Marathon's, they could well be alot more powerful too, because Battlegroup Stalingrad used the carrier Stalingrad as a flagship, althought nowadays it is tradition for carriers to be flagships, that's because aircraft today are alot more valuable, in the halo-verse a longsword can't scratch a covie ship unless it has a nuke on it, so a carrier must have a good ammount of MAC's, armour and other weapons to still be held higher than a Marathon

Re: UNSC Spirit of Fire (CFV-88)-What type of ship?

The UNSC Spirit of Fire (CFV-88) is a modified UNSC Phoenix-class Colony Ship ship built around 2418. Its ship emblem reads "Exitus Acta Probat," Latin for "The result justifies the deed." It was modified for wartime use against the Covenant. Spirit of Fire's onboard A.I. is named Serena

It's a colony ship, modified for war.  Probably a midsized vessel in between a destroyer and a cruiser, but that is just speculation.

Re: UNSC Spirit of Fire (CFV-88)-What type of ship?

wouldnt a colony ship be too small for a MAC gun

but yeah i guess the UNSC took whatever they could get to fight off Covies or Rebels

It was revealed during an E3 interview with Ensemble of course. Do a search for Halo Wars on halo.bungie.org and you should be able to find it right quick.

Re: UNSC Spirit of Fire (CFV-88)-What type of ship?

"The Spirit of Fire" ship would most probably be a carrier based cruiser. Something like a hibrid ship. Why-

Here are the two ships lined up:

    UNSC Battlecruiser- Basic Review:

This ship has massive armor, intirely made of Titamium-A material. Has no less than 20 "Archer" Missile Silos over the whole body of the ship. Each silo contains 10 missiles. Has upto 3 MAC guns, varying by size from small to super (depending on size of the cruiser). Also has gun turrets all over the body of the ship used for anti-air defence and operated by the ship's AI. Can carry a small "LongSword" Fighter squadron and a "Pelican" boarding vessel squadron. Also contains the quarters of a small army of marines and all the training area needed. Can make a Hyperspace Jump.

    UNSC Supercarryer- Basic Review:

This ship is a purposebuilt carryer with armor intirely made of Titanium-A. Lightly weaponed, with only one MAC gun. Also has more than 20 "Archer " Missile Silos, with 10 missiles in each silo. Has gun turrets over it's body for anti-air defence operated by the ships AI. Carryes 20 "LongSword" squadrons, 18 "ShortSword" Bomber squadrons and a significant "Pelican" boarding vessel squadron. Contains upto 4 Platoons of "Hell's Airborne"-ers and 4 Marine Platoons with all the training area needed, including enough ammonitions and fuel to last them 6 months of intense fighting. Can make a Hyperspace jump.

So if "The Spirit of Fire" is an extended version of the Supercarryer, purposly built for the job of exterminating the Rebells and then the Covenant Bugs, it would be one sweet ride. Of course it could be fust a carryer, a Supercarryer that is....
