I just saw the trailer of Halo Gen for the first time. I never even knew this existed, and I consider myself a 'Halo fan boy'.

    Embarrassed

Microsoft has the rights to Halo, but it was pretty low of them to cancel HaloGen after it was in development for over two years. Sure, if they cancelled it a month or two into production that would be okay, but to have those guys put such hard work into making a Halo RTS possible and see Microsoft squash it merciless is stooping pretty low. :(

i'll say what i've always said.

Micro$**t didn't want competition. they didn't want a Netscope.  where MS released IE with their OS for free, and nearly gotten Netscope out of business.

they didn't want Halogen to happen to Halo Wars. so they used the fact that they have the legal rights. but Halogen won the moral war.

No business in their right mind wants competition. They're in business to make money. I dont know how halogen won a moral war, they stole (to their credit they tried to contact the correct people apparantly) an IP, tried to build it into another companies game engine (C&C), and were told to stop.

Do you think with the sucess of Halo that MS wouldnt consider a RTS idea for themselves (and we all know thats what it was going to be on mac), no-one knows what really happened, well no-one thats gonna spill the beans that is.

MS had every right to do what they did, when they did. They decide when and what products are released using their IP, not us.

Having said that, the community doesnt need to be treated as a rival business, there are better ways to do this, even if its justified.

MS and Bungie owe their fans quite a bit, thats why i believe its coming to a xbox 360 console first. As a reward.

    1. its netscape

    2. it couldve been because they didnt want competition OR, if couldve been cause they didnt want anyone using their copyrights without permission, like any other company wouldnt want someone else to...thats why they have copyrights to begin with.

    3. how the hell did halogen win "the moral war", they were the only ones throughout all of this that attempted to break the law

Why did you type in all caps.  Do you honestly believe that your opinion matters so much that someone will lock the thread just because you posted in caps ??

Re: Now we know why Halogen was cancelled...

Here, I'll compare for people who just don't get it....

Say it's the year 2000 again, and development on Halo is in full swing. All of a sudden, a group of people start taking all the Halo concepts and turning them into a mod for Half-Life. They offer it for free, thus in theory take at least some revenue and sales away from the real Halo. MS shuts them down, end of story.

Fast forward to 2006... same thing. It doesn't matter how much, if any, revenue HaloGen would have taken from Halo Wars, MS has a LEGAL right to defend their IP.

I'm tired of people bashing on MS for what they think are strong arm, monopolistic (is that a word) tactics. So someone's whining about a FREE web browser or media player... WHAAAAAAA!!!!! Make a better product, or shut up. Frankly I'd like to kick the EU's rear end for imposing unfair penalties on MS.

Anyways, I was looking forward to HaloGen myself, just cause it was taking Halo in another direction. I'm sorry to see it go, but I'm ecstatic that a full fledged, official Halo RTS is coming out. Sure, the HaloGen team put plenty of work into it, though I'm sure they just spent free-time on the project, not pouring blood, sweat, and tears into it as some people think. They knew that this could happen, prayed it didn't, and accepted it (if maybe a tiny bit grudgingly) when it did. Maybe they can take solace that the interest in their project spurred the development of Halo Wars, and put it past their egos (which I doubt would be the case anyways) and just enjoy the expansion of the Halo universe.

    Well said.

And besides, the Halogen team can at least use what they produced as experience and use it in their portfolio. People should be glad that MS let it go on for so long anyway. They do have legal right to do what they did. Tis not like they quash any attempt to even make a halo inspired map for another game is it?

yes, they do have legal rights to tell people to stop producing mods after 2 years of hard work.

You must work for Microsoft because after two years of working on a project they did pour their blood, sweat and tears. How do you they didn't? They deserved to have it out and about, Microsoft is just being a huge *** about it because if it went out most likely their game wouldn't make a cent. Heck did you see that Skyhawk? It looked just like the HaloGen version, that tells you something, Microsoft was either stealing concepts or was working with 'em, and I'm not really sure about the former.
