    Spartan R41:

So where are you saying it's at? Voi or Monbasa? Halopedia says it's inbetween the two cites, but from in-game play I find it to be closer to Voi than where I imagine Mombasa would be.

Also keep in mind that New Mombasa (you can actually search it on Google Earth) is on a pennensula. The Portal is in the middle of the savanah under Mt. Kilimanjaro's "gaze".

okay i just beat ODST and after you beat it youll realize i am right

    Re: Halo ODST confusion ...

Firstly, I don't want to know anything that happens at the end of ODST yet; I'm still working on beating it. However, there's no way that the Portal can be in New Mombasa; I don't care what happens at the end. If the city's glassed, then it's glassed- so what. That doesn't meant that the Portal is under Mombasa. I quote the Librarian from the Terminals:

    Halo 3 Terminal 6, Redirect:

L: My work is done. The portal is
inactive, and I've begun the burial
    measures. Soon there'll be nothing
but sand and rock and normal ferrite
    signatures.

You should see the mountain that
watches over it. A beautiful thing -
    a snowcapped sentinel. That's where
I will spend what time is left to me.

The mountain that she's talking about is Mount Kilimanjaro; which isn't near to New Mombasa. It's closer to Voi, which is where you are when the Ark is opened in Halo 3. Mombasa is far South East of both Voi and Mt. Kilimanjaro, as well as the Ark Portal from my observations.

    Re: Halo ODST confusion ...

If I'm wrong then I will admit it, but all that I'm saying now is that from every map and in-game observation that I've made, the Portal isn't under either city, but near Voi.

    But I guess I'll see.

    Re: Halo ODST confusion ...

Actually, yes it does. New Mombasa is built of the current Mombasa, which in Halo 2 is Old Mombasa. Voi is an existing city in Kenya, and there is an island near Mombasa that's actually called Zanzibar.

Kizingo (spelling?) Boulivard? It exists- or rather Kizingo district exists. I urge you to Google Map search "Mombasa, Kenya"

There's also a Tsavo West National Park.

Real maps or no, the Ark Portal is stated as being under Mount Kilimanjaro by the Librarian. Unless New Momabasa upped and shifted North West inland, then it can't be there by what I know.

they use real names of places but they do not fit exactly where they would today.

also the land would shift moving it into different locations.

also in the haloverse they named place diffrently, in contact harvest when Johnson returns to earth he is in the Chicago zone which is a lot larger than the city is.

they use name from our world to help us connect more to the importance of the earth.

Tectonic plates don't move that quickly. They might move an inch a year so by 2552 it would only be a few dozen feet.

    Re: Halo ODST confusion ...

Well, wow. That honestly was a shock. I was wrong about New Mombasa, and still am wowed by it.

However I wasn't 100% wrong on the location of the Portal, and I've compiled a hodge-podge theory to explain why.

    ****************************************** Spoiler Alert ******************************************

This picture will help greatly, please view it.

Now, from this picture I've mapped out that Voi is about 70-80 miles (112-128 kilometers) away from New Mombasa. In the scene where the Phantom escapes New Mombasa, we see that the Portal isn't directly under New Mombasa. It's more accurate to say that the mega-city is placed on the edges of the Portal, with the outmost sectors of the city being dug up first. However, some things need to be taken into consideration.

Halo 3: ODST took place during the night of October 20 and the morning of October 21st. A couple months later, when the Chief returned to Earth, the Covenant was still digging, but this time you see them digging near Voi. It cannot be denied that the Portal was near Voi, I was correct in this. When you blow up the AA Turret in Halo 3 and watch the Portal activate, you're in Voi. This is the shipping town that's hit by the Flood ship, and the setting for the level Floodgate. The Portal is invariably near Voi. However it's also apparently near and partially under New Mombasa.

In the map that I've provided, I outlined a possible location of the Portal. I remember something being said about "35 miles East of Voi," so that's where I started. That's the line leading 35 miles East from Voi. The large blue circle is a possible "scale" of the Ark. I'm about 98% certain that's it's location, however. So, the Southeastern edge of the Ark would be under/near New Mombasa, and the West Northwest  edge would be near Voi. Voi wasn't directly over the Ark, as it was still standing (until the Flood came). When viewed from Voi, Mount Kilimanjaro (also seen in the Google Earth image above) could be seen, as shown during the Eulogy ending in Halo 3.

    Re: Halo ODST confusion ...

the covenant started digging because when regret jumped it revealed part of the portal, and his ship was also near the space elevator, i have a feeling Mombasa is much larger than what we would expect.

    P.S. told you i was right  :P

also tectonic plates shift about 5 mm a year

    543 * 5 = 2715

    2715/ 10 = 271.5, or almost 3 meters.

which amounts to almost 5 kilometer change on the surface, though still barely noticeable due to other plate movements, its very rare 2 plates move in opposite directions.

Actually the digging started at the end of ODST. The Portal wasn't revealed when Truth jumped, just marked- I think. I'll take a second look at that, but I'm pretty sure it was just marked.

We were both right, in a way. The Ark is near both. But yes, you were right about Mombasa :)
