    Re: UNSC = Navy?

    Hey, Navy ordnance:

To be honest, reponse time had never occurred to me when I was trying to understand where you were coming from in your posting.

    My bad.

Even I have to admit, that the USA has it going on when it comes to being able to move troops around the globe.

Jeez, you folks have whole friggin' squadrons of heavy-lift aircraft, eg. C-17 Globemaster.

Canada's, just now, thinking about getting a couple, so we don't have to hitch rides on American flights.

    Now, back to HaloWars....

Unless someone at Bungie decides to correct me...

I'm of the impression that the armed branches of the UNSC don't include an "Air Force", and for the simple reason that it's assets would most likely have been incorporated into the "Navy", to save on manpower and resources.

Why would you bother funding a branch that has been rendered obsolete?

For example, in today's militaries, there's no need to fund observation-type hot-air-balloons, like was used in WWI, as we now have UAV's et al.

If there was a need for planetary based "air"-craft, why not either use "Army" assets, Marine assets, or just have a Navy unit stationed there?

On the other hand, I don't see how there would not be a need for an "Army" even if were to just be considered as a kind of planetary "national" guard, plus, there is no way every nation would be willing to subordinate the entirity of their militaries to the UN.

Another reason for keeping an "Army" is simply for the ability to use them as a ready pool of personnel for reinforcing the Marines.

Then, keep in mind, there is, as has already been mentioned, the R & D element.

Who else, but the "Army" would be in the best position, geographically, to conduct serious research and development on anything dealing with surface combat?

Stuff like armoured vehicles, ballistics, artillery, superior vehicle armour, superior anti-armour weapons, body armour, and then there's always my personal favourites, grenades and other explosives.

    Later.

    Re: UNSC = Navy?

    Dmand:

I looked through a few rankings of militaries in the world and got these results.

Done by intelligence agencies from America, Europe, Asia.

    1. USA
    2. China
    3. Germany
    4. India
    5. France
    6. Russia
    7. UK
    8. Italy
    9. Israel
    10. Pakistan

    Most money spent

    United States
    Japan
    United Kingdom
    France
    China
    Germany
    Saudi Arabia
    Italy
    Iran
    South Korea

    Largest army

    # China – 2,840,000

    United States – 1,431,000
    # Russia – 1,200,000
    # India – 1,145,000
    # North Korea 1,055,000

Sorry kobun i even looked for the UN report but i could not find it. These are all official rankings. The first one is from the CIA and the equivalents in european and asian countries. Not only is america not 7th but it is first in all except size.

My commission and assignment to the Centre for Strategic Studies has been pending since '95, so, it is entirely possible that I may have gotten a bit behind on my literature.

Therefore, my intel may be out of date, but......

What year are these reports from?

    From what specific agencies?

And, lastly, where did you find these reports?

    Later.

    Re: UNSC = Navy?

One of the biggest things that the airforce is well known for is recon, Cargo shipments, and some serious Bombardments.  I was driving threw my base one day and saw one of the airforces' big liner jets.  not even two of our fighters combined can match the size of one of the 4 Engines to that F***er!  The thing dwarfed our airport pretty bad.  Looked like something like an empirial palace with wings and a bad paint job.  I think the Airforce may either be completely dead in the Halo-verse, but it could also be in with those recon space-stations....  Just a thought of a possibility....    But I think the're dead.

Another possibility is that they went into Naval Engineering with warships and fighters...  The longsword does look kinda like the stealth bomber.   ....sorta

    Re: UNSC = Navy?

My reports are off the internet. SO they cannot be entirely trusted. I just googled Top ten militaries and i got a couple articles. I am not disputing what u say about canada's military but i doubt highly that america would be 7. The inteligence agencies where the CIA and its equivalents in other countries. The UN Wire rank, which is that paragraph i remeber was very recent.

    Re: UNSC = Navy?

First off, I would like to clear up some misconceptions between the army and the marines. The Marine Corps are essentially "naval infantry," they started out because back when the Navies were more integral to wars (US Revolution, War of 1812...) they needed a force that could take and hold a beach untl they were able to move in the Army, which is "land infantry." Given this information, one could guess that the UNSC Marines are meant to establish a land platform for the UNSC Army. However, you never really see any Army soldiers in the Halo universe for one simple reason, Bungie wanted to give the regular soldier(being non-Spartan or ODST "Helljumpers.") the appeal of the tough-as-nails space marine that has been seen and recognized since the days of Doom. However that does not mean that the Army is simply not there, because if you look into the Halo universe, The Master Chief is rarely fighting on UNSC held territory, meaning any ground force that would be sent would be comprised of the Marine Corps. So it is not entirely unfeasible that the player would not come across any Army soldiers during the course of the games.

On to the subject of ranks. The Army and the Marine Corps both use the same basic rank structure, though they sometimes have different names for each rank. For example in the Army, there are Private First Classes, but in the Corps they are called Lance Corporals. The only real diffrence in rank structure is in the Navy and Air Force.

The Master Chief cannot be classified as a Marine at all, because he is a Navy boy. The rank of Master Chief is only found in the Navy. Also if you have read any of the books, it says that the Spartan II program was created by Section 3 of ONI, or the Office of Naval Intelligence. So really, the Master Chief is the one who is not  a marine, aside from the various naval officers mentioned.

As far as the Helljumpers are concerned, they are indeed marines, a special forces class, akin to the current Marine Corps Force Recon. However they dont halo jump. A halo jump is a form of parachuting where the jumper is flown several thousand feet into the air. Then they jump from thier Plane(or in this case it would be a Pelican dropship) and freefall 75% of the way down before ejecting thier parachute. This ensures two things.

    1. Enemy anti-air emplacements cant hurt the planes (or dropships).

    2. A stealthy entrance, because the enemy cant pick up the aircraft, or the jumpers.

The Halo jump is used mainly with special forces to give them a quiet infiltration.

The ODSTs of Halo are dropped from pods out of a UNSC ship, which wouldnot at all be a quiet entrance. It is just a way for the Helljumpers to get feeton the ground faster then a pelican could take them. Im sure that the UNSC has some kind of in atmosphere Halo jump for Subtle operations, however.

Sorry for the lenghthy post, but I'm a bit of a Military nerd( actually a huge military nerd).

    Re: UNSC = Navy?

good first post... But i wonder why so many people are talking about the MC as not being a marine. I have not read anywhere in this thread, or any other ones for that matter where someone has siad tha john is a marine. I am just curious why there are a couple of people keep bringing it up.

Also all military/goverment "ranks" are the same structure but with different names. In the military Enlisted is designated an E and Officers have an O. for example. E-9 indicates a Master Chief Petty Officer (Navy), Chief Master Sergeant (AF), Sergeant Major (Army), and Sergeant Major (Marines). The only difference is the names and the army and marines have a few more special positions, ie E-9S. This system is their pay grade.

    Re: UNSC = Navy?

    thank you

As for the master chief, in one of the posts (I believe it was on the first page) someone said that John was the only one that really qualified as a marine, I was just informing them of the fact that he is Navy. Its just that most people see John as a marine because thats who he fights alongside.

    Re: UNSC = Navy?

    POSTED BY LINK ON PG.1:

UNSCDF = United Nations Special Corps Defense Force

UNSC = United Nations Special Corps

    UNSC = Marines

But there are obviously crew. Look at the Pillar of Autumn in Halo 1. There are crewmembers who aren't soldiers.

As for soldiers, I don't think Earth really uses soldiers anymore since this is supposed to be the uniting of humanity against a common enemy (the Covenant).

There is no actual Army, and the UNSCDF is comprised of marines and soldiers - like the Admiral on Cairo Station and Captain Keyes.

Master Chief is really the only soldier that can solidly be classified as a Marine - the other marines just look like they belong in the Army since they aren't really equipped as marines.

The ODST troopers are Marines - HALO jumpers, actually. And its funny that they end up HALO jumping on a Halo.

I hope this answers your question.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thats why I talked about the chief.

    Re: UNSC = Navy?

It's  United Nations Space Command.  Not Special Corps!

And most people Think John is a marine because most don't think that the Navy really Have ground force at all.  All they see is big ships and sweet jets about.  I got into a big arguement with a Marine about navy's ground units.

    Navy's Mobile Combat units

    -CB's  Contruction Battalion,

    -EOD  Explosives Ordnance Disposal

    -Seals  Self explanitory

    -SWWk  Seal support

-Sand Sailer Army trained Sailors that help both Army and Marine battalions.

It may not look like a lot, but there are quite a bit of mobile units under those names as well.   I did work with EOD mobile unit 17 for a little bit, it was the time of my life doing so.  But I'm not quite up for physical standards to stay with them unfortunately. The Marines my have more units, but the navy have a few of their own.

    Re: UNSC = Navy?

hey zesty u must have missed the several posts stating that the MC is a navy boy. The way a soldier is equipped does not show what military force they are a part of whatsoever.

The MC = A navy boy. He is under ONI and i believe under NAVSPEC though i dont remember.

Marines = These are the guys he fought with.

ODST = Bad a** marines. Drops to surface in a pod not in a HALO jump.

"Crewmen" = Navy sailors. Guys with keyes were officers.

No offence meant. Just presenting the facts.
