Grim Fandango:Using your own imagination in your own story doesn't lead to a convoluted plot. Wanting ideas or your own story is lazy and nonsensical. Why you'd want to write someone else's idea outside of ghost writing is beyond me.

Do you actually read this stuff? Or just come over here to correct people.

Ha ha :P No, I do read some. Just out of interest.

You don't get the point of Fan-fiction do you? It's mainly tribute to a universe or a certain writer. Sure a lot of people go off and explore areas not really covered by mainline stories, but they take ideas and themes allready well established.

When you have to create an entire universe from the start it takes a lot of ingenuity and careful thought. That's why most writers tend to write from what they know, or some archetype like the fantasy genre. Stephen King writes a lot of books and he uses a lot of the same ideas in such as the setting and characters  such as the bully.

Fan-fiction is not  lazy or nonsensical, it's a way to explore a universe you have a respect for, and  helps early writers get started.

I didn't say fanfiction was lazy or nonsensical. Read my post before you waffle about things you clearly no little about (the fantasy genre is not an archetype, that makes no sense). I wasn't attacking the forum, either, I was attacking the thread. Asking for ideas for your own story IS lazy, fanfic or not.

Second sentence of your original post disagrees with that statement. You said you didn't understand using somebody elses idea, which is part of the point of fan fiction to begin with, as your using a pre-established universe as a jumping off point, ergo an inital idea.

You clearly didn't understand what I meant.  Sure Fantasy is a genre not an archetype, but there are a lot of archetypes WITHIN that genre. Think about how many Tolkien inpsired fanatasy works have been created since the Lord of the Rings.

It may be, but to be honest, this guy is new, and no doubt very new to actual writing and instead of attacking the guy, i think it would be more effective to help him progress and help him improve as a writer.

Ever thought about maybe doing a story following a small group of marines and their struggle to survive in a destroyed world?

    If you catch my ball?
