Sayhitobooyah's post has no real truth to it.  Jap is not a word used in the Japanese dialect to describe themselves.  It was a slur originating among Westerners in the early part of the 20th century.  I don't call my self IriJap because I'm half Irish half Japanese. 

"Jap" is just what we use to call the Japanese because "Japanese" takes way too much effort to say/spell/type/pronounce/think about.
