From expierience? A Navy SEAL being called a footsoldier would most likely start breaking bones. It'd be like calling a Pilot a Swabbie, except the SEALs are a bit... crazy-cool. A footsoldier being called a SEAL woudl probably chuckle, and advise the same. They're different.

They fight on foot dont they? They are a soldier arent they? Then the term "footsoldier" applies.

Also note, the SEALs are made up of several different branches of the military. They have intel ops going through their program, Marines, Force Recon, Green Berets as well. They all apply for the training and are selected to participate. Atleast as far as I am aware.

So what about the special forces in the RAF???? namely the SAS sure they fight on foot but nobody in there right mind would call them foot soliders its like being downgraded and considered a normal soilder. but they aint, NAVY seals fight on battle ships and such so there not just footsoilders i agree they fight on foot but there call navy seals and the SAS for a reason, after all you would'nt call an engineer( that fixes planes and tanks) a foot soilder would ya even though they are trained to use a weapon

You dont know what a Navy SEAL is do you? They are a spec. ops. group of soldiers who do covert insertions by water and then proceed to their objective on foot, then pull back to their home base (generally a submarine). They fight on foot. To me that is a "footsoldier".

SAS fights on foot, thus the term footsoldier applies to them. Engineers are soldiers first are they not? Do they fight on their feet? Then the term "footsoldier" can be applied to them as well.

I am well with in those limits.

Now then, are we going to continue to talk about my personal application of a term or are we actually going to talk about the topic?

I don't think a Navy SEAL or SAS would share your humor/personal application. The term Foot Soldier is a generalized term for infantry. They're not the special forces, which are a "step above." Were we to be over analytical, everything save vehicles pilots and operators would be foot soldiers.

The entirety of military forces wouldn't refer to their special forces as Foot Soldiers, so you can't accurately say that it applies to them. It's like the Football vs Football (European) argument.

Re: What would you want. Battalion of Elites or ODST's

I think that the massive discussion of whether ODST tech in general was better than standard marine may have been slightly irrelevant, and not even actually responding to the comment that began it.

What was needed to be determined was whether or not the ODSTs on the Autumn were given better tech than regular ODSTs, not marines.

    Same goes for training.

And I still say Elites win. A high ranking grunt's probably just about the equal of an ODST in a straight up fight, and Elite's shields, well, ODSTs can't compete with that.

All that aside, I like the personality of Elites more anyway.

I'm assuming that in such large numbers we would have all ranks, skills, and roles of the unit in question, and a high ranking elite would slaughter ODSTs all day.

Im assuming it was my comment that started the tech stuff, the PoA was for the spartans only to go into enermy territory and there missiles where in there as well as the super MAC cannon 2 help with the mission the only reason the marines and ODST where on there for the battle of halo because some where saved by john on a oribal defence station (johnson was one of those) or up from the elevators from reach otherwise if they where already on there, there wouldve been more than 1,100 soilders since u can fit a colony in the PoA. so they wernt given any specail tech that other ODST would'nt have gotten. (made sure that wouldnt start another tech disscussion lol).

although those ODST's where from the 105th battalion they where known for takeing the hardest missions and being the more insane and bad ass ODST in the UNSC and where used in all major batttles including battle of earth and the ark.

But on halo both delta and 04 ODST creamed the covenant without the chiefs help mainly on 04 havent read about delta yet they took on elites grunts a pair of hunters and flood and still won with minimal casulties while the covies where whipped out on 04 and hell one ODST escaped the explosion aswell and helped take a covie ship

Re: What would you want. Battalion of Elites or ODST's

I haven't read any books about delta, but just going from the game, I'd say that the ODSTs on delta would have been absolutely annihilated if not for The Chief. And they did have his help. Also worth mentioning that the Covies didn't expect them there, and were mainly distracted by The Chief anyway.

I did say i was'nt sure about delta and reading it after i posted kinda says eveything but the chief and arbiter got off of the halo without being infected with the help of the gravemind strangly :S but yea my argument about the 1st halo stands XD

Re: What would you want. Battalion of Elites or ODST's

I'd have to rule in favor for the Elites.

    1. Considering that when you put up the average Elite vs ODSTs. I agree that it is a difficult match up. When the battalion of elites is offered to the perspective person, will they be able to specify what rank the elites are?

    2. Alot of the ground engagements that went on had the grunts/jackals fighting most of the time for the ground engagements. It was later in the war at the fall of Reach when the Elites actually came into play. Similar to the Drones.

    3. Elites beat ODST's in just about every way. Technology, training, experience, hell, also just pure stubborness. I believe there was a quote stating that an Elite depleted from his weapon, would rather fight to the death then touch a full loaded assault rifle at their feet.

    4. Dying in battle is fine for Elites. ODSTs.....*** and moan when they get shot. "Oh god! It hurts....." How was Romeo after he got rammed in the chest with a grav hammer? In the Cole Protocol, Jora, one of the Elites under Thel barreled head long into the fire of twenty marines and it only wounded him.

    5. And technically putting the Elite vs and ODST is putting a ninja vs a samurai. Eventually the samurai will blink and boom, he's dead.

Now.....to clear some of this up. Matching the Master Chief against any of the covenant according to Bungie will ALWAYS end in a win for Master Chief.  It is the equilivant of having an action movie with a main character, and the lowly grunt guy with an annoying laugh will end the movie for the main character. It doesn't work that ahhh, the minor character will kill the main character. Everything is skewed from the point of whoever you are playing at that time. The ODSTs worked in Halo3 ODST, because the player is playing one of the ODSTs.
