Chapter One:
Running
Quiet... I hadn't heard that in almost three days, there was always the constant sound of pursuit, the screaming of brutes, guns sounding off in the distance... but it is quiet now something that makes me very uneasy. I turn my head away from the dark, fog covered jungle and look back at my family down in a small natural ditch, Troy already asleep and my wife sitting next to him. I smile, at least they got out with me I think to myself, I turn my head to the jungles again and realize that there is no point keeping watch, there is just too much fog. If the brutes come upon us during night they can slit our throats at least it would be over with. I walk over to my wife and sit down next to her she leans on me and puts her head into my chest and cries silently. She stops after a while and I brush her hair behind her ear and kiss her on the cheek.
"I love you", I whisper, "and nothing will ever change that"
"I love you too" she whispers back.
"Now get some sleep your going to need it for tomorrow" I whisper, she nods and grabs hold of Troy and quickly falls asleep holding him.
It is in the early hours of the morning now and I still haven't been able to get a single second of sleep, this unnatural quiet echoes through my head and resounds in my skull, something skitters to my right and I jump up and pull out my pistol and I find myself staring right into the eyes of a mongoose. I smile to myself and shoo it off, I leave my family for a moment and walk until I reach a cliff side and I sit on the edge and watch as the sun rises above the tops of trees and golden light skims across the green treetops below. I pull the data chip from my pocket the entire reason they're after us I think solemnly.
The fear of death is to die knowing your job isn't done, the greatest joy of life is to die knowing your job is done... the only problem is that to do my job I need to kill every covenant bugger out there...
