2 theories on the origins of the flood

 

1:they were created as a bioweapon in another galaxy during some terrible war.gravemind was probably made as a way of keeping them under control.after winning the war,their creators couldn't stop them and they ran wild.after they ate everything in their galaxy they set off to find more food

2:they were part of an ecosystem on some world somewhere.but had curbed their instincts to avoid using up all the food.then a curious passer by brought them onto his ship and they infected the crew.after gaining their knowledge they realised that there was an unlimited supply of food out there.naturaly they went nuts infecting everything they could until the food supply was gone.so they set off to find more

my theory is they started out as bacteria. then an alien race came to the planet to se if it was habitable.. the found the bacteria and ran some test on it.. then the bacteria started to evolve onto somthing bigger and behold the parrasite. it started to infect everyone there.. then the alien race3 got it together and got out. leaving them behind. then the race came back and contained the flood and ran more test.. then they figured out how to control them and used them for science reasons.. the gravemind was the controler and soon started to realize it was capable to much more than listening to others. it reelled and had the flood go on an onslaught and got out of containment. thats when the race started to build rings..

the flood are old, and they were at war with the fore runners (i believe a predesesser of humanity)(hahahaha *** u christianity lol) but anyway i think that the theory  on a biological weapon is almost right though it is less of a species creating a weapon more a weapon creating a species then over taking its creator and starting a new war the flood v forerunner war the fore runners then start the rings construction to stop the flood the flood win in a sence that they survive and then awake to find the mc elites and more happy happy fooooood

the forerunners were trying to make new life, but made the flood instead. Then the flood was put into test areas, but the flood grew soo big that it broke out. So the forerunners made the rigs and the flood crash landed on the rings

The forerunners didn't create the flood. They speculated the flood came from another galaxy, hence the Homeworld: Extragalactic[?] in the forerunner data banks (beastiarium). The fact is when they first encountered the flood, they had no idea what they were up against, which is why lost lost so many worlds to the flood before the war began properly.

The flood are a bit like the Necrons from 40k. I think that somewhere a long time ago in a galaxy far far away an ancient race (not forerunners) were experimenting with bioengineering and screwed up. The flood began to operate like a hive mind (whether or not bees and ants actually operate within a hivemind i dont know but i think they do) and spread from the planet, as the race was unprepared for the consequences of their actuions.

Hence the flood spread and consumed that galaxy and they have spread ever since until they reached the Milky Way and the Forerunners.

another theory:

religious fanatics cant make people believe in their religion so they warn of a great plaque on all non-believers.when no-one pays attention they engineer the flood(possibly from another lifeform,could be a variation on theory 2)after releasing them on a small colony they realise they cant stop them and they begin to kill everything in the galaxy.they make gravemind in an attempt to control them via him,but naturaly he doesnt play along and soon the galaxy is totaly overrun.
